Welcome to Provence’s second city after Marseille! If you’re searching for cheap air tickets to Avignon, then soon you’ll discover this is a destination worth travelling to, a city with few competent rivals in beauty, culture and history. The capital and epicentre of the 14th-century Avignon Papacy, Avignon is a unique French city with a special love for arts and culture, honouring its heritage and captivating its visitors. Organise your trip and book your accommodation in Avignon, wander around the fortified city’s cobbled streets; enjoy the view from the Palais des Papes and get lost among museums, galleries and exciting exhibitions.. What to do next? Well dance “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” of course, as the traditional French song urges us to!
Fortified and shining, beautiful Avignon boasts a rare independent character; it has something of the old days, when Avignon was the capital of the Christian world, during the medieval times and after the French Revolution.
Glory came to Avignon along with Pope Clement V, in 1309. Starting as a fugitive from Rome, he set the foundation for the 70-year Avignon Papacy that followed – and the contribution to "the second great schism" of the Roman Church.
Nowadays the Papacy is history, but modern Avignon remains a genuinely historical site as a whole; inside its great walls and fortifications, Avignon still reflects the artistic and cultural majesty of the past.
Architectural treasures, medieval forts and palaces, picturesque bridges and idyllic spots; all found in a city that seems unchanged for the last 800 years, but in reality it runs at the speed of light!
Avignon’s airport (Aéroport d'Avignon - Caumont) is located 8 kilometres southeast of the city centre and can be reached by bus and taxi.
Getting around Avignon
You can get around Avignon by bus and taxi. Fares start at 1.30€ and minimum taxi fare costs 2.00€.
You couldn’t start your day in Avignon elsewhere other than the Place du Palais that today houses two very important historic buildings.
The first one is the Cathedral, (Cathédrale Notre Dame des Doms), it was built in the 12th century and today it houses tombs of a number of important popes. Notice its roof top; it bears a golden statue of the Virgin Mary that weighs 4.5 tons!
Besides the cathedral, you can see the Palais des Papes, the legendary Papal Palace, the world’s largest Gothic palace and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Palace served as the headquarters of the Avignon Papacy for 70 years, until 1417. It’s been described as “the Vatican of the North” and its role in the “Western Schism” was crucial.
Continue to Avignon’s major site, which is none other than the Pont St-Bénézet, the bridge immortalised by the 15th-century “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” song. It was built in 1185 and, at the time, it was the only bridge spanning River Rhône and connecting Avignon to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Only 4 out of the 22 arches remain until today, yet it’s still Avignon’s most emblematic site.
Finally, you shouldn’t miss these two Avignon’s museums:
- The Avignon Museum (Musée Angladon), housing impressive art collections with works by Picasso, Braque, Max Jacob,Cézanne, Sisley, Derain, Degas and Modigliani
- The Musée Lapidaire, hosting exhibitions of French and Roman sculptures from Provence
