    Information about Baku

Baku, stretching across the world’s largest lake and surrounded by volcanoes and mountains, is the proud capital of Azerbaijan. Research shows that this is the birthplace of the Vikings! Moreover, Azerbaijan was the first Islamic Republic in the world, back in 1918.

Through thousands of years of various conquerors and 120 years of soviet rule, Baku has received Greeks, Romans, Mongols and Arabs who each and every one of them sculpted the local landscape of the city. Baku is, ever since, a melting pot of people, cultures and religions.

The international airport of Baku (Heydar Aliyev International Airport) is located 20 kilometres northeast of the city centre and can be reached by Express minibus 116.

    Getting around Baku

You can get around Baku by metro and bus (marshrutkas). Fares start at 0.20 AZN and minimum taxi fare costs 1.06 AZN.

    Baku Guide

The modern side of Baku has a futuristic skyline with cutting-edge architecture and many on-going working projects. Famous examples are the three 80-story sky scrapers shaped like flames, also known as the “Flame Towers” – “Azer” means Fire – and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, designed to look like a spaceship. Their construction is now almost complete and once they are finished, they are going to give Baku’s skyline even greater charm and majesty.

Beyond modern Baku and away from the city crowds, the medieval Old Town of Baku is the place to be, the whole region designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights of the Old Town include the following:

    • The Maiden Tower (Qiz Qalasi) is one of the main architectural landmarks of the Old Town of Baku, built a few thousand years ago. The construction of the tower is linked to more than one tales and legends.

The most popular one says that there was once a wealthy ruler who fell in love with his own daughter and asked her to marry him. Appalled by the idea but unable to refuse her father’s wish, the helpless maiden asked of him to build a tower so tall, so she can climb to the top and see the extent of his immense property and wealth. When the tower was finally built, she climbed to the top and jumped.

The most realistic explanation why the tower was named the “Maiden Tower” is most probably that no enemy ever managed to penetrate the tower and get through the defence of Baku.

    • The Palace of the Shirvanshahs, once the seat of the dynasty who ruled Azerbaijan during the medieval era, is open to the public. Built during the 15th century, it had to be rebuilt in 2003; nevertheless it is one of the most popular historical and architectural attractions in the Old Town of Baku.
Azerbaijan’s long tradition in carpet weaving is honoured in the Carpet Museum, exploring the history of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan and exhibiting more than 1,000 rare carpets from Azerbaijan, Iran and surrounding areas.

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani.
