    Information about Bologna

Bologna’s nickname “Red” refers to both the city’s architecture and political beliefs, since it always had a left wing approach. Since the 1977 Bologna uprising, following the murder of a young activist by the police forces, things have got rather quiet.

Nowadays, Bologna is a city of students, where spirits grow and consciousness is shaped. Bologna’s youthful energy is one of a kind!

The University of Bologna was founded in the 10th century, onto the foundations of an old law school from the 5th century!

Capital of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna is the jewel of northern Italy, a historic treasure that boasts great art, architecture, history, people, food and nightlife. Of all the cities of the Italian North, Bologna will be the most unforgettable to you!

Bologna’s airport (Aeroporto di Bologna-Guglielmo Marconi) is located 6 kilometres northwest of Bologna and can be reached by trains and buses.

    Bologna Guide

Your day in Bologna begins at Piazza Maggiore, the city’s central square, where a number of palaces are situated, highlight being the monumental renaissance Palazzo Communale, now housing the Bologna City Hall.

    • North of the square, the Basilica di San Petronio is a Gothic church that one could say is one of Italy’s most beautiful and imposing basilicas. It was built in the 14th century and the interior decorations date back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

    • Just around the corner, you will notice St. Peter’s Cathedral of Bologna and behind it the two Towers of Bologna, “Torre degli Asinelli” and “Torre degli Garisenda”. These towers date back to the 12th century and are the only ones that survived, of the 200 that existed previously.

If you are looking for the famous and much photographed arched street, you will find it down Via Zamboni. Follow the arches and you will pass by the University of Bologna and the National Gallery. This is one of Northern Italy’s most important national art galleries, boasting an excellent collection of Giotto and Rafaello artwork, from the 14th century until today.

Head to Bologna’s city centre and you will come across the Basilica di San Domenico, the place where the Dominican Order was born. The church is impressive, a beautiful blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements.

Whatever you do, do not miss visiting the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna (MAMbo)! Be prepared to see some of the world’s most precious works of art from World War II on, masterpieces by Italian and international artists, spread out in an area of 9,500 sq.m.

Finally, if you have a passion for motorcycles, check out the Ducati Museum, to learn everything about the thrilling history of the legendary company!

    Bologna’s official language is Italian.
