Bolzano Guide

Begin your exploration right at the heart of the Old Town of Bolzano and the medieval Piazza Walther square, dominated by the imposing Duomo.

The Cathedral of Bolzano dates back to the 12th century, built in the typical Gothic style of that time. It’s the single most emblematic building of Bolzano, situated in a marvellous location, commanding great views of the Dolomites.

Within short distance, the Chiesa dei Domenicani church is well worthy of your time, primarily due to the precious treasures of local art it holds. The church was built in the 13th century and is famous for the elaborate frescoes of the interior, depicting scenes of local everyday life. Among them, you can notice a beautiful collection of works by the School of Giotto, dating back to the 15th century.

Next stop is the Archaeological Museum of Alto Adige (Museo Archeologico dell'Alto Adige), in which Bolzano takes great pride.

The ultimate highlight of the Archaeological Museum of Alto Adige is, without a doubt, Ötzi the Iceman, the naturally mummified body of a man who lived in around 3,300 BC and was discovered in a glacier of the Ötztal Alps!

An extremely important and useful finding, Ötzi became the subject of extensive research and gave us valuable insights on the tools, clothes and lifestyle of our ancestors of the Copper Age!

Continue to the Castel Mareccio, at the banks of River Talvera. Having served as a castle during the 13th century, it is now a conference hall and represents a fine example of medieval architecture.

You cannot leave Bolzano without riding the cable car to the Altopiano del Renon. From as high as 900 metres above sea level, you can enjoy a magnificent view stretching from the panorama of the city to the fairy-tale Dolomites encircling Bolzano.

Bolzano has two official languages, Italian and German.
