    Information about Bordeaux

Bordeaux’s fine grape varieties and vineyards have been popular since the Roman times; up until today, it’s difficult to come across a destination so closely linked to viticulture and winemaking.

(Good) Wine has played a crucial role in the development and growth of Bordeaux and its population of 236,000. It is true that you can find at least one wine store in every corner of the city!

What characterises this French city though, besides wine, that surely “gladdens human hearts”? Its beautiful Baroque and Gothic architecture! Following a major revitalisation project, the city’s 18th-century stone buildings were restored in such an extent, that the whole city of Bordeaux was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Apart from the marvellous cityscape of Bordeaux, this city offers you the chance of tasting world-class wines, visiting excellent art galleries and dining in fine restaurants, while experiencing the French lifestyle.

Modern Bordeaux is a city that looks towards the future, honouring its past heritage. A walk across the Garon River, a stroll on the city’s paved narrow streets and squares are more than enough to convince you of the true, genuine beauty of this place.

    Airport

The airport of Bordeaux (Aéroport de Bordeaux-Mérignac) is located 12 kilometres west of Bordeaux and is accessible by bus and tram.

    Getting around Bordeaux

You can get around Bordeaux by tram, bus and ferry. Fares start from 1.40€ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.00€.

    Bordeaux Guide

Your exploration of Bordeaux begins at the Saint-Michel quarter, a primarily medieval district, famous for its 18th century medieval architecture. This is one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful and charming districts and it’s the perfect place to discover Bordeaux's local character.

    • Highlight of the district’s medieval skyline is the conical bell tower of the Basilica of St Michael (Fleche St-Michel). Built in 1472, this is the second tallest stone tower in France! A staircase of 228 steps will lead you to the top, where you can enjoy a marvellous panoramic view of the city.

    • Holding a strategic location over the city, the Cathedral of St. Andrew (Cathédrale St-André) is a monumental building and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was initially built in 1096, but it was extended in the 13th and 14th centuries, acquiring the magnificent sculptures and carvings you now see on its façade.

The majesty of the Cathedral is exceeded only by its bell tower, 50-metre-tall Gothic Tour Pey-Berland. The bell tower was a later addition of 1863 and is topped with a statue of the Notre Dame de l’Aquitaine.

    • The Museum of Aquitaine stands out from the others, featuring interesting collections of Gallo-Roman sculptures and more than 25,000 archaeological items collected from Aquitaine and the French colonies in Africa and Oceania.

    • To get a more contemporary feeling, head to the old warehouse of 1824, where the French colonists used to store their coffee, cocoa, peanuts and vanilla stocks, known as "Entrepôt Réel des denrées Coloniales".

The warehouse now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art (CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain) and hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions of art, paintings from the ‘60’s, the ‘70’s and the ‘80’s, as well as digital exhibitions and video presentations.

The official language of Bordeaux is French.
