    Information about Brighton

Brighton was once a small fishing village of East Sussex, now transformed into one of England’s most popular beach resorts. And all thanks to a doctor!

Doctor Richard Russell, in around 1700, began to advise his patients from the capital to start swimming. With King George’s help, he founded a centre where the English aristocracy could reside and enjoy a good swim. This was only the beginning!

Today, Brighton is the ultimate party destination, famous for its long beaches, nightlife, rich artistic and cultural scene and its student population.

Since 197, Brighton has formed a unitary authority with neighbouring Hove.

Visit Brighton and be prepared for some of the most exciting times in your life!

Brighton does not have its own airport. The best way to get to Brighton is by flying in to Gatwick Airport, 40 kilometres away. From the airport, you will find several trains (First Capital Concept and Southern) departing to the city centre.

    Getting around Brighton

You can get around Brighton by the extensive bus network running Brighton and Hove. During the period of time from March to October, the Volks Electric Railway is also available, the world’s first electric railway. Fares start at 2.00£ and minimum taxi fare costs around 2.60£.

    Brighton Guide

Brighton’s most significant landmark is definitely the Royal Pavilion, considered as one of the world’s decorative and architectural wonders! The Royal Pavilion was built in 1823 by John Nash, to honour Prince George, who soon became the King.

The Royal Pavilion is one of England’s most luxurious buildings and, with strong Islamic elements, it has a unique, eastern-like charm.

Continue to two of Brighton’s most important and interesting museums:

    • The Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, housed in the renovated royal stables, boasts an exceptional collection of 20th century art works – expect to see many Salvador Dalí masterpieces - , as well as Egyptian collections and a photography exhibition depicting Brighton’s history.

    • The Hove Museum & Art Gallery is located in Hove, Brighton’s neighbouring town now united to the city. The museum houses great collections of old toys, dolls, dollhouses and traditional tricycles, contemporary art collections and history exhibitions.

Brighton’s heart and soul lies somewhere else though; the legendary Brighton Pier is the reason why Brighton is considered to be England’s capital of entertainment. The ultimate place to be for everyone wishing to have a fantastic time, the Brighton Pier is full of restaurants, bars and amazing happenings.

Brighton Pier is the only surviving pier, after the historic West Pier – its one and only rival – was heavily damaged after a series of severe weather conditions. Future plans for the old pier's renovation and the construction of a 176-metre-high observation tower – Brighton i360 – are still under consideration.

Around the coast, provide some time to visit the Brighton Sea Life Centre. This is the world’s oldest aquarium, dating back to the Victorian era! After a full renovation that took place in 2012, the Sea Life Centre is open to visitors and houses, among others, 150 whale species that you can watch inside an undersea tunnel!

The official language of Brighton is English.
