    Information about Brindisi

For more than 2,000 years, Brindisi was one of the greatest crossroads of the sea-routes between Italy and the rest of the world. Today, the situation is somewhat different, though Brindisi still is an important seaport, with special connections with Greece and the Ionian Sea.

During antiquity, Brindisi was a primary stop of the Appian Way, the longest and greatest Roman avenue, archaeological findings of which you can come across at the city centre.

Brindisi is one of the basic gateways to Italy, but it’s also a quite interesting travel destination. Spend some time wandering around the city’s streets and you’ll soon discover the wealth of ancient treasures, followed by the magnificent modern accomplishments of this part of Italy.

With endless possibilities, choices and offers to visitors, Brindisi has nothing to be jealous of from other popular Italian destinations.

    Airport

The airport of Brindisi (Brindisi – Aeroporto del Salento) is located 5 kilometres north of the city centre and is accessible by bus.

    Getting around Brindisi

You can get around Brindisi by bus; fares start at 1.00€ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.00€.

    Brindisi Guide

The most recognisable landmark in Brindisi, apart from the port, is the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Casale, the first church you come across right after the airport. This marvellous and impressive church was built by Prince Philip of Taranto, in around 1300.

With clear Roman, Byznatine and early Gothic references, the church is famous for the exquisite “Last Judgement” masterpiece decorating the entrance wall – a work by Italian artist Rinaldo di Taranto.

The second most significant church of Brindisi is none other the Cathedral (Duomo). The first cathedral was built in the 12th century, but during the 18th century it was renovated and rebuilt, retaining some of the characteristics of the original structure.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum of Brindisi (Museo Archeologico Provinciale Ribezzo). This excellent museum boasts extensive archaeological collections with items referring to different period of Brindisi’s history; ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, mosaics, coins, ceramics, military equipment and bronze statues.

Continue to two of Brindisi’s most notable attractions:

    • Roman Column: One of the two Roman Columns that used to mark the beginning of the Appian Way in Brindisi. The second one was later relocated to Sant’Oronzo, in the city of Lecce, in 1666.

    • Castello Svevo: The emblematic castle of Friedrich II von Hohenstaufen, one of the most ambitious and powerful Holy Roman Emperors. It was built in the 13th century and has served as an imperial palace, a prison, a fortress and a marine base.

The official language of Brindisi is Italian.
