    Information about Bruges

Bruges is the capital of West Flanders, one of Belgium’s 11 provinces, sharing borders with the Netherlands, France and the North Sea.

Bruges was founded as a Gallo-Roman settlement and soon became a key-player in Belgium’s maritime affairs. Trade flourished across Rivers Dijver and Reie and stopped when the river floor rose to a height prohibitive for ships.

The canal system that survived though, gave Bruges a new perspective; maybe Bruges’s development could now stem from tourism!

News travel fast, so it was not long until this fairy-tale town got popular and started receiving some serious numbers of tourists annually. Maybe it’s time you too checked it out!

    Airport

Brussels’s airport (Luchthaven Brussel Nationaal/Aéroport de Bruxelles National) is the nearest airport to Bruges. It’s located 109 kilometres from Bruges’s city centre and is accessible by bus and train.

    Getting around Bruges

You can get around Bruges by the extensive bus network. Fares start at 1.30€ and minimum taxi fare costs 2.35€.

    Bruges Guide

Bruges’s historic centre is surrounded by a 7-kilometre-long canal network. Among the canals you will find most of the city’s sights and hotels, in an area completely paved, with no cars allowed inside.

Bruges’s focal point are the two main squares, Markt and Brug, both of which once were traditional markets.

    • Brug is the oldest and most important one, at the location where in the 9th century rose the castle that would later become the city of Bruges.

    • Markt used to be the city’s commercial hub and now houses cafes, restaurants and, once in a week, it hosts a large open-air market.
One of Bruges’s most picturesque landmarks is the Belfry. A gigantic Gothic 83-metre-high tower bearing 47 bells, the Belfry offers marvellous view to those who climb up the 366 stairs to the top.

Continue to the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk church that was completed in two centuries and is famous for housing one Michelangelo’s few original sculptures, along with Flemish decorations.

Within short distance, the Groeningemuseum is well worth your time, a small, yet of world-class fame museum. Collections include the best of Flemish and Belgian art, with special honour to Flemish painters from the 15th to the 20th century.

Finish your day in Bruges with a walk at the Begijnhof. Founded in 1245, the building was occupied by the Beguinage of Bruges, a legion of women who chose the monastic lifestyle, without taking any religious vows. You’ll now come across only Benedictine Sisters, but it’s a quite beautiful and serene place to enjoy.

    Bruges’s official language is Flemish.
