Welcome to Cancun! Long white beaches, azure crystal water, a heaven on earth for the sunbathing and water sports lovers. If you’re searching for cheap air tickets to Cancun, you’ll probably know that it’s one of the world’s top travel destinations, combining the Caribbean charm and the Mexican exotic aura. With 4 million visitors annually, one can hardly believe this luxurious summer resort, not too many years ago, used to be a quaint fishing village! Families, athletes, lone travellers and just-married couples, all enjoy the charm of Cancun, each for their own reasons. And this is exactly the main pro of Cancun; it gives everyone what they were looking for! Plan ahead and maybe you’ll have a chance of finding cheap hotels in Cancun - but keep in mind this is a once in a lifetime experience and it’s worth every penny!
Cancun had the perfect success formula; crystal-clear azure waters, fine white sand and endless development possibilities. A group of Mexicans were the first to realise this and take action. And so it happened; in 1974, the small fishing village was suddenly transformed into a 5-star resort!
If you’re interested in finding cheap fares to Cancun, we would strongly advise you to believe 100% what the travel guides say. Tourist development in Cancun is without precedent and continues to grow; luxury hotels and enormous tourist resorts keep popping up here and there, attracting millions of visitors annually!
The key-characteristic of Cancun though is not to be found in any hotel, grand resort or luxurious restaurant; Cancun’s most precious, significant, exciting and magical attribute is none other than the beaches!
And, while the idea of endless lazy days sunbathing at the beach sure seems tempting, Cancun is ideal for diving, swimming and, above all, exploring the majestic history and cultural heritage of the Maya civilisation.
An experience to remember!
The airport of Cancun (Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún) is located 25 kilometres from Cancun and can be reached by bus, private bus and taxi.
Getting around Cancun
You can get around Cancun by the city’s three private bus lines, starting at the Hotel Zone of the city. Fares start at 8.50 MXN and minimum taxi fare costs 25.00 ΜΧΝ.
Cancun is divided into two distinct regions, the Hotel Zone (Zona Hoteléra), surrounded by 25 kilometres of beaches and the city centre (Centró).
- Begin your acquaintance with Cancun paying a visit to the Mayan Museum (Museo Maya de Cancún), where you’ll find one Mexico’s most important Mayan collections. 350 items found all over the Yucatán Peninsula are housed in a brand new building, distributed across three wings.
- If you wish to know more on the great Mayan civilisation, you will particularly enjoy the San Miguelito archaeological site. Follow the path from the Mayan Museum (use the same ticket) and you’ll come across a collection of restored Mayan houses that date back to 1250-1550, right before the Spanish conquest.
Among the houses, you will also see a palace with 17 columns and the 8-metre-high Great Pyramid (Gran Piramide).
Cancun’s Underwater Museum (MUSA) is a must-have experience once you’re in Cancun. More than 400 life-sized statues form an extraordinary collection.. placed underwater, on the sea bottom, at the coastline between Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
The MUSA collections include hundreds of human figures, a work by British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor, and represent a new idea of protecting the region’s corals. The statues themselves act like corals, providing the home for many sea life species!
Visitors are free to swim around the statues; all you have to do is take part in Aqua World’s guided diving sessions.
Continue to Isla Mujeres, the small but beautiful isle 16 kilometres north of Cancun. The island was named “Isle of Women”, after the sculptures of feminine human figures found all over the region by the Spanish conquerors.
The carvings and statues of feminine figures are attribute to the Mayas who are said to have created them to worship Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility. At the island’s south-eastern tip, there’s a temple dedicated to Ixchel, at the top of which you can see an observatory.
Cancun wouldn’t be Cancun if it wasn’t for the beaches! Choices are countless, but we advise you to visit Playa Langosta, for an authentic exotic feeling!Cancun’s official language is Spanish.
To be able to travel to Cancun, you need a valid passport with validity up to 6 months after your planned journey. Greek Citizens don’t need a Visa to enter Mexico, for a maximum stay of 180 days.
