Chisinau’s two focal points are the two parks that are located right at the city centre’s heart.
Starting from the Cathedral Park (Parcul Catedralei):
- Chisinau’s Orthodox Cathedral (Catedrala Mitropolitană Nașterea Domnului) was built in 1836 in a distinctive neoclassical style and is famous for its enormous bell tower, reconstructed in 1997.
- Chisinau’s Triumphal Arch, also known as the “Sacred Gate”, was designed by I. Zaushkevich and built in 1841 in honour of the Russian victory over the Turkish.
Chisinau’s second public park is the Ştefan cel Mare Park (Grădina Publică Ştefan cel Mare şi Sfînt), named after Ştefan cel Mare, a medieval prince and a Moldovan national hero.
As you walk around the park, you could visit these two museums:
- The National Fine Arts Museum of Chisinau, housing interesting collections of contemporary art, focusing on Romanian and Moldovan artists
- The Pushkin Museum, housed in the house where Alexander Pushkin, the great Russian poet, spent three years of his exile in Moldova and conceived some of his classic masterpieces
