    Information about Concepcion

Concepcion is Chile’s second largest city after Santiago de Chile and, though many say it doesn’t look like the typical tourist destination, it really has something to stimulate the curiosity of visitors.

Nature has been particularly harsh to Concepcion, with earthquakes and tsunamis destroying most of the city’s architecture and shuttering the lives of the locals. However, Concepcion is not the quitting type; it keeps surviving, growing and looking forward.

Today Concepcion is an extremely interesting destination for you to explore, bearing an outstanding amount of historical heritage and acting as the primary gate to exotic Patagonia.

    Airport

The airport of Concepcion (Carriel Sur International Airport) is located 7 kilometres north of the city and can be reached by bus and taxi.

    Getting around Concepcion

You can get around Concepcion using the city’s bus network (micros). Fares start at 220.00 CLP and minimum taxi fare costs 250.00 CLP.

    Concepcion Guide

Your day in Concepcion begins at the legendary University of Concepcion (Universidad de Concepción), Chile’s third oldest educational institution and one of the country’s most significant. Housed in an elegant colonial building, the university is surrounded by lush gardens and owns an art gallery worth visiting.

The “La Casa del Arte” gallery of the University of Concepcion boasts a collection of around 1,800 paintings by Chilean artists and welcomes thousands of visitors annually.

Continue to the Museo y Parque Hualpén, founded by the writer and unrepentant traveller Del Río in 1938 and housed in an old building of 1885. Collections include, apart from the interior itself of the house, memorabilia from Del Río’s travels – he travelled round the globe four times!

A few kilometres outside Concepcion, Lota is a small town recently transformed into a major tourist hotspot. The city was founded in 1662 and during the 19th century it went through a tremendous development, due to the fact that Chile’s main coal mines were situated there.

The “Chiflón del Diablo” coal mine ceased operations in 1997, yet today it serves as a museum; guides are the ex-miners! This is the world’s only mine with natural ventilation that stretches under the Pacific Ocean surface level!

Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to see the world’s second oldest floating museum – and one of the few remaining. The mighty warship Huáscar stands as an eternal symbol of national reconciliation and unity among Chile, Peru and Bolivia. It also commemorates all those who’ve fallen during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884).

    Concepcion’s official language is Spanish.

    Visa Requirements

To enter Chile, you need to have a passport with validity until 6 months after your travel dates. Greek citizens don’t need a tourist Visa, for a maximum stay of 90 days.

    When to Go

Concepcion’s has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cold, humid winters. Due to the city’s geographic position, temperatures rarely reach levels higher than 30º C and lower than 0º C, while rainfalls are equally distributed around the year and reach their higher levels in July.

As a result, you can visit Concepcion all-year-round.
