Constanta was founded in 600 B.C. as a Greek settlement named “Tomis” (Τομίς) and it was then the main port serving the inland. It was later renamed after Constantia, niece of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Modern Constanta is a famous travel destination. An idyllic summer resort by the sea, Constanta boasts some of the best beaches you could find across the Black Sea.

And when you think you’ve had enough of the sea, the sun and the beach – if it’s ever possible – you can always enjoy a city full of life, historical monuments and architectural treasures; not to mention Constanta’s legendary nightlife!

Constanta Guide

Your day in Constanta begins at the city’s central square, Piata Ovidiu. The square was designed by sculptor Ettore Ferrari in 1887 and is decorated with the statue of Roman poet Ovidius Publius Naso; the same poet after whom it was named.

Continue to Constanta’s Historical and Archaeological Museum, an excellent museum that presents the history of the city through the years, featuring interesting historical and archaeological collections of items found within the region, dating back to the ancient Greek and Roman times.

Right next to the museum, you can enjoy the legendary Roman Mosaics of Constanta! They’re kept in a modern building just around the corner and they are a sight for sore eyes!

Constanta’s colourful Roman mosaics (Edificiul Roman cu Mozaic) date back to the 4th century. They were discovered in 1960 and they became a landmark and symbol of the city.

Head to the seafront, where you can enjoy a pleasant walk across the port and admire the Genoese Lighthouse (Farul Genovez), built in 1860 to honour the Genovese merchants who directly contributed to the economic development of Constanta.

Last but not least, at the end of your stroll you will come across the great Moscheea Mare Mahmoud II mosque, commissioned by King Carol I and built in 1910. Apart from its obvious architectural value, the mosque is of major religious importance, serving as the spiritual hub of more than 50,000 Muslims that form part of Constanta’s population.

Interesting fact: The Moscheea Mare Mahmoud II mosque boasts ownership of Europe’s largest Persian carpet!
Constanta’s official language is Romanian.
