    Information about Derry

Derry/Londonderry stretches at the banks of River Foyle, surrounded by hilltops on one side and the North Coast of Ireland on the other. A city steeped in history, Derry has much and more to say and show to us.

The Catholics call it Derry, the Protestants Londonderry; the official name is now Derry/Londonderry, in an attempt to get over the massive conflict known as “The Troubles” that greatly affected the city and its residents.

Modern Derry is going through an extraordinary cultural and artistic growth, gaining higher and higher positions in the tourist circuit and steadily being defined as a fast-growing travel destination.

The second city of Northern Ireland is a fascinating place. It may come as a surprise, but it’s definitely a pleasant one. On your next visit to the UK, why not visit Derry!

    Airport

The airport of Derry (City of Derry Airport) is located 11 kilometres northeast of the city centre and can be reached by bus and taxi.

    Getting around Derry

You can get around Derry using the city’s bus network. Fares start from 1.20£ (day-ticket) and minimum taxi fare costs around 3.00£.

    Derry Guide

The largest, most impressive and significant historical sight in the city of Derry are the walls of the old fortified town. Built in the 17th century, the 8-metre-tall and 1.5-kilometre-long city walls are the only fortifications in Ireland that have survived in such a good condition.

Enter through the Shipquay Gate and you will come across the Guildhall square, where the City Hall of Derry (Guildhall) is situated. Dominating the skyline of Derry and representing a primary landmark, the Guildhall is built in a neo-Gothic style and features elaborate murals that depict step-by-step the story of Derry.

Your next stop is the Tower Museum, housed in the renovated medieval O’Doherty Tower.

The excellent Tower Museum is dedicated to the history of Derry, from the Plantation of Ulster, to the 20th century and the thirty years of “The Troubles”.

Continue to St. Columb’s Cathedral which is the first Protestant church both in Ireland and Britain, before you head to the legendary Bogside district, just a few steps away from the city walls.

Famous as the epicentre of the Bloody Sunday and the starting point of The Troubles, the Bogside district today is transformed into an open-air gallery, exhibiting murals made by the Free Derry residents; vivid, emotional, strong and educational.

Northern Ireland has no official language, though English is the de facto spoken one. Other spoken languages are Ulster Scots and Irish, recognised as minority languages.
