Dubai is an extraordinary destination. Situated at the United Arab Emirates, at the southeastern coast of the Persian Gulf, it has a population of 2,000,000. Gaining more and more international fame as a cosmopolitan resort, it has greatly developed within only 60 years.
Luxurious hotels and ultra-modern shopping centres, gourmet restaurants and some of the world’s highest buildings, Dubai surely is like nothing you have ever seen before!
The airport of Dubai (Dubai International Airport) is located 4 kilometres northeaster of Dubai and is accessible by bus and metro.
Getting around Dubai
You can get around Dubai by bus, metro (2 lines) and the Abras, small ferries with a capacity of 20 passengers. Fares start at 1.80 AED and minimum taxi fare costs 3.50 ΑΕD.
The first thing you’ll notice upon your arrival in Dubai is the mighty Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world! With a height of 830 metres, this is one of the most important buildings in the skyline of Dubai and by far the most impressive one.
Burj Khalifa opened in 2010 and houses a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cafes, bar, health spas and an ultra-luxurious hotels decorated by Armani himself.
The fastest lift in the world will bring you up to 450-metre-high observation platform, for the most outstanding view you have ever witnessed in your life!
Burj al Arab is yet another fine example of the cutting-edge architecture of Dubai. At the height of 321 metres, Burj al Arab was, in fact, the tallest building in the world right before Burj Khalifa was built.
Apart from its imposing height, the “Arab’s Tower” will catch your eye for another reason; its beauty. Shaped as a ship, the building is placed on an artificial island and houses a luxurious and very expensive hotel.
5 stars would be too few to rate this one; Burj al Arab’s hotel is considered to be a 7-star hotel!
The third participant in the “Golden Trio” of Dubai’s skyline is not one, but two. We’re talking of course about the Emirates Towers, two twin towers currently housing company offices and hotels.
If you wish to see a different side of Dubai and learn some history, you should definitely visit the Dubai Museum. Collections there include traditional costumes and jewellery, reproductions of bazaars and buildings, as well as items reflecting traditional professions and activities, such as collections of pearls, fishing equipment and traditional “dhow” ships.
To get a glimpse of the religious heritage of Dubai, it is worth visiting one of the city’s mosques. The only mosque open to non-Muslim visitors is the Jumeirah mosque, situated in the Jumeirah district. Take the guided tour around this beautiful all-white mosque and get closer to understanding the Islamic culture.
Before you go, you should not miss some of Dubai’s best spots of great natural beauty; keep in mind that the beaches of Dubai are extraordinarily beautiful and very well-organised.
If you’re a nature and adventure-lover, a guided safari tour in the desert of Dubai would be an ideal experience for you.
The official language of Dubai is Arabic, but the vast majority of the population speak fairly good English.
To travel to Dubai, you need to have a passport, valid until 6 months of your travel dates. To enter Dubai, you will also need a tourist Visa, issued upon arrival at the airport.
When to Go
The best time to visit Dubai is during winter (November to April), when median temperature is around 24ºC. Be extra careful if you’re travelling during the period from May to October, as temperatures seem to rise, reaching record-highs, such as 49ºC!
