    Information about Edinburgh

The capital of Scotland is a city of both great beauty and great history. The green Scottish landscape is elegantly enriched with fairy tale medieval architecture – and Edinburgh has never been more beautiful.

Edinburgh was founded in the 6th century by Celts, Saxons and Normans and, within a few centuries’ time, it was established as the capital of Scotland. Despite signing the Treaty of Union of the United Kingdom, Scotland always retained its own church, laws and parliament, keeping the Scottish identity alive and powerful.

Edinburgh is built upon seven volcanic hills!

Visitors in Edinburgh enjoy the best of arts and culture, in an environment that loves and continuously encourages the development of the mind and spirit.

Museums, galleries, historical and cultural sights, as well as festivals, special nightlife hotspots and the unrivalled Edinburgh Festival that attracts three times Edinburgh’s population (480,000) every year; all these and many more are there for you if you decide to visit Edinburgh.

Although we must warn you: If you visit once, chances are that you will come back again and again!

    Airport

Edinburgh’s international airport is located 9.3 kilometres west of the city centre. It is accessible by the buses Airlink 100 Express (Lothian Buses), Air Direct 747 (Stagecoach) and public buses (Lothian Buses).

    Getting around Edinburgh

You can get around Edinburgh using the city’s extensive bus (Lothian Buses) and railway network. Fares start at 1.50£ and minimum taxi fare costs 2.45£.

    Edinburgh Guide

Your day in Edinburgh begins at the heart of the Old Town and the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is a 1.6 kilometre long road that covers the area from the Castle of Edinburgh to the Holyroodhouse Palace. A walk across the Royal Mile is a perfect chance for a great deal of sightseeing, as you’ll come across many historic landmarks. It is, after all, around this area, that the most important events of Scotland’s history took place.

    • The Edinburgh Castle is the city’s most treasured site, looming over the city from a location that was crucial to Edinburgh’s defence and fortification. Castle Rock hill’s surface extends around the mouth of an old inactive volcano; the surrounding nature is immaculate, the view is magnificent!

    • The St. Giles’s Cathedral had been serving as the “Mecca” of religious faith of Scotland for more than 900 years. The cathedral’s most popular section is the Thistle Chapel, built in 1911 to honour the Knight of the Most Ancient & Most Noble Order of the Thistle.

As you continue on, you will pass by many medieval passages, museums and churches, before you arrive at the Scottish Parliament building and the Holyroodhouse Palace, the official royal residence from the 16th century until today.

North of the Old Town, Edinburgh’s New Town – which was actually founded in the 18th century - is equally interesting. Around New Town’s streets you can admire excellent examples of Georgian architecture.

    • The National Museum of Scotland is well worth your time, as it’s a great opportunity for you to learn all about Scotland’s fascinating history, as it’s presented through interesting collections of precious national items.

    • The Craigmillar Castle, the beautiful medieval rival of the Edinburg Castle, famous for its association with Mary, Queen of Scots who sought refuge there, after the murder of her secretary by her jealous husband, Lord Darnely – and they say that it was in that castle that she plotted his murder.
The Craigmillar Castle is one of Scotland’s most well preserved medieval castles! Plus, it’s the perfect alternative to the crowded and expensive Edinburgh Castle.

You cannot leave Edinburgh without enjoying its extraordinary nature, admire the views and see as more of it as you can! The panoramic views of Edinburgh Old and New Town from the top of Calton Hill will leave you speechless! The Royal Botanical Gardens, with lush vegetation, elegant decorations and an exotic feeling will calm your body and mind – exactly what you’ve wanted!

Scotland’s official language is English, but Gaelic and Scots are officially recognised Scottish languages and are considered to be of great cultural and historical importance.
