Πληροφορίες για Faro

Founded by the Romans, loved by the Moors and conquered by the Portuguese. Faro is the capital of the southernmost Portuguese province of Algarve and it will surely captivate your heart!

Faro has known a great deal of disasters; from the fierce attacks of the British troops of Count of Essex, to the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. Yet it managed to survive, develop and emerge as a top travel destination of Southern Europe!

One of the most popular gateways to explore Algarve, Faro offers everything you would expect from a Mediterranean summer resort – even if, in reality, it’s the Atlantic and not the Mediterranean Sea that makes up Faro’s coastline.

Combing its striking natural beauty with an astonishing wealth of historical landmarks, important monuments, interesting museums and nightlife choices, Faro is exactly what you need for your summer holidays!

The international airport of Faro (Aeroporto Internacional de Faro) is located 4 kilometres west of the city centre and can be reached by bus (EVA Transportes).

Faro Guide

Upon your arrival in Faro, head to the Old City (Cidade Velha), the main focal point of the city. Enclosed by Moorish fortifications, the Old Town stretches from the Arco da Vila gate and the marina to the Arco de Repouso gate; an idyllic labyrinth of cobbled streets, alleys, churches and historic buildings.

Enter through the Arco da Vila gate and follow the street that leads to the Largo da Sé square, where you can see two notable buildings, of great architectural and historical interest:

  • The Archbishop’s Palace (Paço Episcopal) dates back to the 18th century and is the replacement of the former one, destroyed by the British troops in 1596. Notice the splendid colourful decorations with azulejos, an excellent example of this traditional Portuguese decorative art.

  • The Cathedral of Faro (Sé de Faro) was built in 1251 at the place of a former Roman temple and later Moorish mosque. It was brought down to the ground by the terrible earthquake of 1755, but was later rebuilt with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements – and, of course, lots of azulejos!

The most striking church of Faro, the Capela dos Ossos is a chapel of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Faro.

The chapel was built in the 19th century; the building material consists of 1,245 bones, skulls and skeletons of monks. Why, you may ask. The concept behind this practise was to reflect the ephemeral nature of human life.

Continue to the Museu Municipal, housed in the Nossa Senhora da Assunção convent, and enjoy a fine selection of archaeological items and Roman mosaics.

Then head to the Praia de Faro, Faro’s most popular beach, to get away from it all! Only 10 kilometres away from the city centre, the beach features fine white sand and azure waters, just what you need after a day’s walking around the city!

The official language of Faro is Portuguese.
