Ferrara is a city of northern Italy, a few kilometres away from Bologna. Capital of the Duchy of Ferrara, it soon became an important artistic and cultural hub, due to the Este family’s love for art and culture.
Modern Ferrara is a frequently overlooked destination; visitors usually prefer Florence or Bologna. However, it has recently entered a period of tourism flourishing; in other words, things are getting crowded and you’d better visit while it’s still quiet and traditional!
Historic treasures, churches, castles and palaces, world-class art and a tremendous amount of cultural performances, all these added up to Ferrara's UNESCO World Heritage Site status make the perfect European destination!
Bologna’s airport (Aeroporto di Bologna-Guglielmo Marconi) is the nearest airport to Ferrara, located 55 kilometres away from the city centre and accessible by railway.
Getting around Ferrara
You can get around Ferrara by bus. Fares start at 1.30€ and minimum taxi fare costs around 13.00€.
Ferrara’s top attraction is, without a doubt, the Estense Castle (Castello Estense), dominating the city’s skyline. A fully functional castle, with moat, drawbridge and everything, it was built in 1385 by Niccolò II d'Este and served as an Este seat until 1598.
The Este family who once duelled in Ferrara, were rivals to Florence’s Medici. The Estense Castle is an excellent example of their need for superiority.
Near the Castle, you’ll notice Ferrara’s Cathedral (Cattedrale San Giorgio Martire), a 12th century building with Gothic and Romanesque elements. The cathedral is one of Ferrara’s main landmarks, famous for its three-tiered façade and the sculpture depicting the Last Judgement.
Be sure to visit the adjacent Cathedral Museum, to see more artefacts and religious memorabilia.
Continue to the Palazzo dei Diamanti, another precious piece of architecture from the Este family's heritage. The “Diamond Palace” was built in the 15th century and now houses the National Gallery, with art collections by notable national artists.
The Diamond Palace was named after the 9,000 gems that decorate its façade; not because they’re diamonds, but because they are diamond-shaped!
Stop by the Palazzo Schifanoia to enjoy a collection of elegant murals and continue to the Monastero Corpus Domini, a monastery founded in 1406, now housing the marble tombs of the Este family.
Ferrara’s official language is Italian.
