The city centre of Frankfurt has nothing to be jealous of from the world’s most prominent destinations, featuring high buildings, impressive sky-scrapers, artistic neighbourhoods with galleries and museums and a terrific skyline that blends the old and the new.

As a travel destination, Frankfurt is much-loved and offers a wide range of sights, activities and experiences, depending on your taste and budget. In Frankfurt you can find the “business quarter”, where one of the world’s largest stock exchanges is situated and then find yourself drinking warm apple wine at a quaint café, among half-timbered houses and medieval alleys.

Historic heritage, world-class art, alternative hangouts, traditional charm and cosmopolitan spots; just some of the many faces of wonderful Frankfurt!

    Frankfurt Guide

Wander around the districts of Frankfurt and allow a good part of your time to explore as many of the galleries and museums as you can.

    • Visit the Städel Museum to enjoy an excellent collection of paintings, sculptures and a large library with thousands of books and journals

    • Go to the German Film Museum (Deutsches Filmmuseum) to trace back the history of German film and cinema, through two permanent exhibitions focusing on the art of cinematography of the 20th century

Your next stop is none other than the Alte Oper, the Old Opera of Frankfurt. Housed in an emblematic Renaissance building, the opera was founded in 1880, but was burnt down in 1944. It was eventually rebuilt in the ‘80’s and now still dominates the Opernplatz, resembling the original structure, with the statues of Goethe and Mozart guarding the façade.

The indisputable supreme landmark of Frankfurt is the Main Tower and you should definitely include it in your itinerary. The Main Tower is the fourth highest-rising building (200 metres) in Frankfurt’s skyline and offers magnificent views from the observation deck at the top. Alternatively, you can enjoy a romantic dinner at the restaurant of the 53rd floor!

Take a break from the bustling city in one of Frankfurt’s parks. Taste the local delicacies, original frankfurters and apple wine, as you’re taking in the genuine aura of Frankfurt.

Then, you can continue to the Cathedral of Frankfurt and head to the Hauptwache square; the Baroque Hauptwache building is a good choice for coffee and people-watching, before going down the “Hole” ("das Loch") to do some shopping.

One of the greatest personalities of Frankfurt, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born and spent his first 16 years there. His home is now a museum dedicated to the great German writer.

The official language of Frankfurt is German; French and English are also widely spoken.
