Genoa Guide

Your tour begins at the historic port of Genoa, the Porto Antico. Medieval Genoa had been an important trade hub for the whole empire and a key-passage of all the significant trade routes to the East.

Today, Genoa still is an important seaport, while it’s considered to be the most compact historic centre in Europe. After a decade of extensive restoration processes, the port is now the perfect place to go for a pleasant walk – and to get a first glimpse of the world of Genoa.

Continue to the heart of the Old Town, at the Via Garibaldi road, where you can enjoy a series of Renaissance palaces featuring elegant gardens and interesting collections of art and decorations. These are the former homes of Genoa’s richest families; they’re referred to as “Palazzi dei Rolli” and are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Palazzo Reale is the most elaborate of the Palazzi, with gardens greatly resembling the Versailles! Take a tour inside and you will discover marvellous collections of Renaissance art, murals, artefacts and gold memorabilia of the great aristocracy of the past.

  • Head to the Piazza Pelliceria, to see the second most significant Palazzo, now housing the National Gallery (Galleria Nazionale). The Spinola family, the mightiest of the Genovese dynasties owned this palazzo and has done a terrific job decorating it with masterpieces of art dating back to the 16th century.

Your next stop is the Cathedral of Genoa (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo), founded in 1118. With strong Gothic and Romanesque elements, the cathedral underwent a major restoration during the 14th century. Don’t miss the basement, where the Museo del Tesoro is housed and boasts a small but fascinating collection of artefacts and religious paraphernalia.

Finally, don’t leave Genoa without paying a visit to the Galata Museo del Mare. This is place to learn all about the maritime history of Genoa, follow the progression from the majestic past to modern times and trace back the steps of Christopher Columbus.

Genoa’s official language is Italian.
