Travelling to Sweden? Search for cheap air tickets to Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city and a particularly interesting destination. The charm of Gothenburg lies everywhere, from the historical sites and monuments all around the city to the booming music and cinema scenes, the wide green spaces and of course the locals’ favourite hobby: sports! Moreover, in the somewhat pricey Sweden, you have more possibilities to find cheap hotels in Gothenburg and keep your journey on a budget. So what are you waiting for? Try Gothenburg for a fascinating Scandinavian experience!
The city of Gothenburg was planned in the 17th century by designers from the Netherlands who had the required knowledge and skill to build on the muddy, unstable soil of the area. In 1731, the Swedish East India Company was founded and what was then just a town by the port, became a major trading hub between Sweden and China.
As the years went by, Gothenburg was further developed and was soon established as an international trading port of Scandinavia, a title that still holds.
10% of Gothenburg’s surface is covered with parks and green spaces!
With a population of 530,000 and more and more students arriving in the city, Gothenburg thrives with a wide range of sights and activities. Honouring its past heritage and setting the bar for other Northern European cities to follow, this is one of the most beautifully diverse and extremely interesting travel destinations you will ever know!
The airport of Gothenburg (Göteborg Landvetter Airport) is located 20 kilometres east of Gothenburg and is served by buses.
Getting around Gothenburg
You can get around Gothenburg by bus, tram, train and ferry. Fares start from 24 SEK and minimum taxi fare costs 40 SEK.
Your day in Gothenburg starts at the Götaplatsen square, dominated by the magnificent statue of Poseidon and lined with a series of important historical and cultural buildings; the Gothenburg Concert Hall, the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the City Library.
Continue to the Stadsmuseum, where you can admire the only surviving genuine Viking ship and then to the Sjöfartsmuseet that boasts collections of rare equipment, ship models and other memorabilia of the Scandinavian maritime history. Don’t miss the statue of the crying woman, perched on the top of the Sjömanstornet Tower, mourning the Swedish sailors that perished during World War II.
Your next stops are Gothenburg’s two most exciting museums:
- The largest floating museum in Europe, the Maritiman museum consists of a series of 20 historic vessels! You can explore the interior of the ships, submerge into the Nordkaparen submarine and wander around the tangled inside of the destroyer Smålan. With a length of 121 metres, this is Scandinavia’s largest warship ever exhibited in a museum.
- The Röda Sten is a 4-story museum with excellent collections of modern art, also hosting exciting shows and performances, bike races, boxing matches and stand-up comedy shows.
Who could say no to having fun? Discover your inner child at the Liseberg Amusement Park and make your adrenaline reach extreme highs, racing at 90kms/hour on a wooden train or free-falling, reaching 75 kms/hour within 2 seconds! Or simply enjoy a pleasant ride on a carousel and enjoy the marvellous view from the Liseberg Tower!
The perfect ending to you day in Gothenburg would be to catch the sunset at the port; an image that will never leave your mind and heart!
The official language of Gothenburg is Swedish, but practically everyone speak fairly good English.
