    Information about Inverness

Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands and is considered one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. A top travel destination particularly during the summer, Inverness is world-widely known for Nessie, the legendary “monster” of Loch Ness, allegedly swimming at the deep waters of the Loch.

Inverness was founded by King David I during the medieval times, but most of the city’s historic architectural wealth dates back to the 18th and the 19th centuries.

Visit Inverness and, among all other man-made points of interest, you will come across natural landscape of unthinkable beauty. You want more? Inverness is the perfect place to set your base for further exploring the Highlands and the rest of this magnificent country named Scotland!

    Airport

The airport of Inverness (Port-adhair Inbhir Nis) is located 13 kilometres northeast of the city centre and can be reached by bus and railway.

    Getting around Inverness

You can get around Inverness by the bus network Stagecoach Inverness. Fares start at 0.60£ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.00£.

    Inverness Guide

Begin your day in Inverness at the Inverness Castle, a major landmark and a location of great historical importance. Looming over the city at the top of Castle Hill and overlooking River Ness, this is the modern building you’re seeing now, built in the 19th century, but there’s been a significant defensive structure there ever since 1141.

Once you have taken your pictures, go on a stroll across the river’s banks; you’ll soon reach the Inverness Cathedral (St. Andrew’s Cathedral). Built in 1866-1869, the cathedral is the northernmost Primatial seat of Scotland and represents an excellent example of Victorian architecture.

The Ness Islands are undoubtedly the most popular spot around Inverness. Elegant Victorian bridges connect the tiny islands and form a perfect location for a pic-nic; not to mention the “Monster of Loch Ness” and the offered related activities for the believers!

Continue to the Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, a small but highly organised museum, boasting interesting history, archaeology, art, nature and environment collections; once you’re there, don’t forget to drop by the Highland Photographic Archive.

You couldn’t leave Inverness without seeing the next best thing of castles and forts. Fort George’s construction began back in 1748 and was finally completed after 20 years. Today it represents one of Europe’s most well-preserved military forts of the 18th century. Be sure to pay a visit to the Highlands Museum, housed in the Fort.

Scotland’s official language is English, but Gaelic and Scots are officially recognised Scottish languages and are considered to be of great cultural and historical importance.
