La Coruna Guide

Your day in La Coruña begins at the Old Town, Cidade Vella, the medieval core of the city. Starting from the Plaza de María Pita and the impressive municipal palace, you can head out to wander around the Old Town’s cobbled streets, admiring marvellous churches and historic buildings, such as:

  • The Iglesia de Santiago, one of La Coruña’s oldest buildings, dating back to the 12th century. Historical value: priceless!

  • The Iglesia de Santa María del Campo, built in the 13th century, combines beautifully Gothic and Romanesque elements, while the adjacent museum hosts an excellent exhibition of photographs and religious documents.

Continue to the Jardin se San Carlos; this garden is all that’s left of the San Carlos castle that was built in 1843 to provide protection to the city. The garden now houses the tomb of Sir John Moore, the Scottish General that was immortalised through his military training reforms and his heroic death at the battlefield.

Heading to the modern part of La Coruña, you will come across the most notable, recognisable and impressive landmark of the city, the Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules).

Perched on the northern end of the city, the Torre de Hércules is said to have been built by mythical Hercules, during one of his labours. Reality is somewhat different though; built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, the 57-metre-high tower represents the second tallest lighthouse in Spain and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Last but not least, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the two most notable museums of La Coruña:

  • The Archaeological and Historical Museum of La Coruña (Museo Arqueológico e Histórico), boasting thorough collections presenting the pre-history and history of the city. Housed in the legendary 16-century Castillo de San Antón, the museum features ancient Celtic and Roman archaeological items.

  • The Fine Arts Museum of La Coruña (Museo de Bellas Artes), housing an excellent art gallery with masterpieces by Rubens, Goya and other great artists, as well as collections of European paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The official languages of La Coruña are Galician and Castilian Spanish.
