    Information about Lagos

Lagos is the most popular tourist resort in Algarve, Portugal. Situated in southern Portugal, this is the southernmost city of Portugal, a heaven on earth – as visitors claim – that has something for everyone.

Lagos played a crucial role as a port during the Age of Discovery, in the 15th century. The city was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1755 and was, in fact, deprived of the status of the Portuguese capital due to this fact!

In reality, little has changed since the medieval times of Henry the Explorer and Nelson; at least, as far as the beauty and charm of Lagos are concerned.

History-lovers will be thrilled, but the most tempting attribute of Lagos is, without a doubt, the beach. White sand, Mediterranean sun, azure water and the ultimate relaxation. Now we’re talking! Would you dare miss it?

The international airport of Faro (Aeropuerto Internacional de Faro) is located 90 kilometres east of Lagos and is accessible by bus and railway.

    Getting around Lagos

You can get around Lagos by bus; fares start at 1.30€ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.25€.

    Lagos Guide

Lagos is actually a fortified city; the city walls date back to the 16th century, when Kings Manuel I and João III restored and reinforced the already existing Roman walls. The medieval walls of Lagos remain, up until today, particularly impressive, reaching almost 1.5 kilometres in length!

Inside the city centre, your first stop could be the Museu Municipal, also known as Lagos’s Archaeological Museum. The museum is housed in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, a Renaissance 16th century building, at the old Jewish Quarter. Collections include mosaics, artwork, archaeological items and artefacts, dating back to the 8th – 13th centuries.

As you’re approaching the port, you’ll come across the Igreja de Santo António, the elegant St. Anthony’s Church. It was built in the 17th century and its Baroque decorations are listed among the finest in Portugal; the result of the combined talents of the most notable local artists.

The darkest time in the history of Portugal is portrayed in the old Slave Market of the Port (Mercado dos Escravos). The majesty of the Age of Discovery completely fades away, once you think this is Europe’s first slave market, established when the first African slaves were imported from North Africa.

Continue to the Ponta da Piedade, arguably the most charming and idyllic point of Lagos. At the western side of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is a long coastline, interrupted only by rocks and rugged hills. Enjoy a pleasant afternoon gazing at the marvellous view or go for a swim under this wondrous backdrop.

The official language of Lagos is Portuguese.
