Πληροφορίες για Larnaca

Larnaca is a small city with tremendous amounts of charm, molded by a melancholic, seducing atmosphere. The walk across idyllic Foinikoudes, the traditional Turkish district with its cobbled streets, the little whitewashed houses and pottery studios and every nook and cranny around the old market, they’re all different faces of the same astonishing city.

Larnaca was built upon Kition, an ancient maritime city dating back to the 13th century BC, archaeological findings, buildings and roads of which you can still spot in Larnaca.

Larnaca’s second most significant location lies on its northern part. Larnaca’s marina attracts luxurious yachts and ships, primarily during the summer, and leads to the city’s fantastic beaches. Take the coastal road and follow the path through the castle and the old Turkish district and you’re there!

Larnaca Guide

Starting from the Saint Lazarus square, your eye will be caught by the Church of Saint Lazarus, the most notable and sacred church of Larnaca, dedicated to Saint Lazarus – the same Lazarus that gets resurrected by Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

According to the Christian tradition, Lazarus was never accepted by the society of Bethany after his resurrection. Instead, the mob put him in a ship and exiled him, leaving the ship to sail to unknown direction. The ship finally arrived in Kition and Lazarus spent the rest of his life there, until he eventually died – this time, for good.

His tomb served as the foundation for the building of a church dedicated to him. Rebuilt over and over again, the church today mixes Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic elements and is the number one site in Larnaca.

Don’t miss the Salt Ponds of Larnaca, a series of four lakes with high salt concentration, considered as one of Cyprus’s most important wetlands. The lakes are protected by the NATURA and Ramsar networks and are the home of many rare and endangered bird species.

At the shores of the Salt Ponds, you’ll immediately spot the Hala Sultan Tekke, Larnaca’s second most significant religious site. This beautiful mosque, hidden behind palm trees, is famous for housing the tomb of Umm Haram, Muhammad’s alleged wet nurse that died under unidentified conditions in 649.

Hala Sultan Tekke is one of the four most important religious centres of the Islamic religion, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

Moving on, in the same religious mood, you can visit the Catacombs of Phaneromeni Church. Consisting of two underground caves with two burial crypts, the catacombs possibly date back to the Phoenician times.

Legends say that the location of the catacombs have healing properties. Religious visitors who wish to attract them have developed a special ritual they perform in front of the crypts!

Complete your day in Larnaca by paying a visit to the Castle of Larnaca, sitting at the southwestern tip of the city. The ottoman castle you see today dates back to 1625, but it was built on the foundations of an older, 14-century castle.

The official languages of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish, while English is widely and proficiently spoken.
