    Information about Lipari

The volcanic archipelago of the Aeolian Islands is situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily. Seven of the archipelago’s islands are inhabited, with Lipari being the largest one.

The city of Lipari is perched on a volcanic cliff at the south-eastern side of the island and is surrounded by two main ports and beaches.

The Greeks settled in the region of Lipari in around 580 BC and named it Meligunís. The island was later renamed Lipara, after Liparus, leader and first King of the island (18th century BC).

Lipari knew great development, based primarily on the trade of obsidian and other volcanic rocks and minerals. The centuries that followed though, a series of violent volcanic eruptions and pirate attacks led to the desolation of the island.

Today the volcanoes of Lipari are still considered active and you are highly likely to witness fumaroles and steaming spots during your stay in Lipari.

Volcanoes aside, Lipari is a major Mediterranean travel destination and a very popular cosmopolitan summer resort, offering everything a visitor would need.

    Airport

You can reach Lipari by air, from the airport of Calabria (Reggio di Calabria "Tito Minniti" Airport), located 111 kilometres from the island. Hydrofoil and ferry connection is available from Reggio di Calabria (mainland Italy), as well as from the ports of Messina and Milazzo, in Sicily.

    Getting around Lipari

You can get around Lipari by bus; fares start at 1.55€. You can also rent a bike or take a taxi.

    Lipari Guide

The city of Lipari stretches around the area of the Castle (Castello) and it’s a beautiful location that is fairly organised; hotels, restaurants, boutiques and cafes are to be found everywhere across the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main avenue of the city.

Apart from the city of Lipari, in Lipari Island you will come across four more districts:

    • Canneto

    • Acquacalda

    • Quattropani

    • Pianoconte

Be sure to take a day-trip to one or more of them.

The main focal point in the city of Lipari is the Castello, the castle built by the Spanish after the intrusion of the great corsair Barbarossa, in 1544. The years that followed, Lipari extended its boundaries outside the city walls – part of which you can still see today.

Step inside the castle and you’ll see two of Lipari’s most precious sites and landmarks. The first one is the Cathedral of Lipari (Duomo), built in the 17th century. The Duomo is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and houses the legendary silver statue depicting the saint, holding his own flayed skin.

The second most important site in Lipari is none other than the Archaeological Park Contrada Diana. The park was founded in 1976, when archaeological excavations revealed a wealth of Neolithic items, ancient Greek and Roman tombs and buildings; all of which played a critical role in the research on the evolution of the Mediterranean civilisations.

The Museo Archeologico Eoliano is considered as one of the most important archaeological museums in Southern Italy. This is where you can find the complete collections of the archaeological findings of the park, as well as thorough exhibitions of anthropology, volcanology, marine biology and palaeontology, explaining the history of the Aeolian Islands.

Last but not least, visit the Quattrocchi (“Four Eyes”), to enjoy a marvellous view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This is arguably the most photogenic point of the island, offering breathtaking views, so don’t forget your camera!

The official language of Lipari is Italian.
