    Information about Lund

Sweden’s second oldest city, Lund can easily rival the other student city of Sweden, Uppsala, in beauty and history. If Uppsala is the “Oxford of Sweden”, then Lund can be referred to as the “Cambridge of Sweden”, serving as the seat of one of the most elegant and notable universities in the country.

Lund was founded in the 11th century and soon became the seat of the largest archbishop in Europe!

Lund, with a population of 320,000, is a city of charming contrasts, with the medieval element dominant around the cobbled streets and elegant architecture of the city. Traditionally keeping a low-profile and a laid-back atmosphere, Lund certainly is the place to be in Sweden nowadays!

Lund is served by the airport of Malmö (Malmö-Sturup flygplats), located 26 kilometres south of Lund and accessible by bus.

    Getting around Lund

You can get around Lund by bus; fares start from 21 SEK and minimum taxi fare costs 29 SEK.

    Lund Guide

The primary, most important and recognisable landmark of Lund is the Cathedral (Domkyrkan). The imposing building with the twin towers that have become a trademark of Lund, was built in 1080 and represents one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture not only in Sweden, but in Northern Europe.

Don’t miss the fabulous astronomical clock of the cathedral, showing the days, the weeks and the position of the sun and moon on the zodiac circle. The clock was constructed in the 14th century and, after three centuries of not functioning, it was finally restored in 1923 – and has been functioning ever since!

Continue to three of Lund’s most significant and interesting museums:

    • The Kulturen is one of Sweden’s most well-organised open-air museums. Collections include representations of traditional homes, churches and other examples of Swedish historic architecture, as well as ceramics, costumes and artefacts from the Vikings.

    • The Botaniska Trädgården can be considered as a great plant museum; more than 7,500 plant species from all over the world are kept and exhibited, from local species to tropical plants housed in greenhouses. Holding an idyllic location, the gardens are a good place to enjoy a walk or a pic-nic.

    • The History Museum of Lund (Historiska Museet) is the second largest of its kind in Sweden, founded in 1805. There you will have the opportunity to see some of the archaeological findings of the Scania region, dating back to the Palaeolithic era.
The museum’s ultimate highlight is the skeleton of a man estimated to have lived in around 7,000 BC; this is one of the oldest human skeletons found in North Europe!

Finally, allow a good deal of your time to explore the premises of the University of Lund (Universitetsplatsen), consisting of over 100 buildings all around the city. Highlights include the main building Kungshuset and the AF-building, designed by Helgo Zettervall and H. J. Strömberg respectively, the Juridicum and the University Library.

The official language of Lund is Swedish, but practically everyone speak fairly good English.
