Luxembourg Guide

Visiting the City of Luxembourg, be prepared to walk a lot! The city is ideal for walking – unless you own a bike. The list of sights and points of interest is large, so be sure to organise your day properly.

Start your day at the Grand Ducal Palace (Palais Grand-Ducal), former royal seat and now housing the Duke’s offices.

Continue to Luxembourg’s museums:

  • The Luxembourg City History Museum will give you valuable information on the city’s history, through interesting and entertaining collections of wooden miniatures and models, representing every historical era.
When you’re done with the museum’s collections, be sure to take the glass lift up to the upper level, to see the interior of an old mansion.
  • The National Museum of History & Art is housed in a white building with an amazing patio made of glass and presents Luxembourg’s history from pre-historic times through archaeological and art collections.

Now, it’s time for you to discover some of Luxembourg’s famous castles. These two are of great historical importance and beauty:

  • The Vianden Castle, located just a few kilometres outside the city centre, is one of the world’s largest remaining castles. It was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style, it was enriched with Gothic elements in the 14th century and finally, in the 17th century, a Renaissance mansion was added to the structure.

Around the area of Vianden, you’ll come across a series of picturesque little villages, keeping the traditional style alive – and being flooded by tourists.

  • The Bourscheid Castle is located near River Sûre, at the eastern side of the country. Surrounded by walls and fortifications dating back to the 14th century, it’s one of Luxembourg’s most beautiful castles!
The official languages of Luxembourg are French, German and Luxembourgish.
