Madrid Guide

Madrid is a city that can be easily explored in a short period of time and, as a matter of fact, is not as large as it looks.

Right at the heart of the city, Puerta del Sol, “The Gate of the Sun” is a major reference point for calculating all distances around the city. This is where the numbering of houses start and all around it you will find many interesting spots, popular meeting points, cafes and bars.

The area north and west of Puerta del Sol, is called Los Austrias and it’s Madrid’s oldest part.

Don’t miss the imposing Royal Palace of Madrid, built in 1764 to replace the Alcázar Castle that had previously been burnt down.
Up ahead is the Plaza Mayor, the historic Spanish square that nowadays accumulates a wealth of tourist facilities and hotels.

Across the southern and eastern area of Puerta del Sol lies Madrid’s modern heart. A lively neighbourhood with lots of bars, restaurants and boutiques, it also houses three marvelous art museums that enjoy international fame. You can visit all three of them with a single ticket that lasts for a year.

The “Holy Trinity” of Madrid’s museums consists of the:
  • Prado Museum

  • Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and

  • Reina Sofia Museum,

all of which feature excellent collections of Spanish, Italian and Flemish art, spanning a period from the 17th to the 20th century.

Next stop is the Lavapiés district, a neighbourhood of great ethnographic interest, primary destination of African and Asian immigrants that, mixed with the locals, have created a colourful cultural melting pot with a distinctive charm.

From Puerta del Sol head north and follow the Gran Vía Avenue, to find two newly developed districts:

  • In Malasaña you’ll get to know Madrid’s quiet and peaceful face, while in

  • Chueca you will see the real Spanish nightlife.

Finally, you couldn’t leave Madrid without paying a visit to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid’s legendary stadium!

Castilian Spanish is Madrid’s official language and English is widely spoken among tourists.
