    Information about Malmo

Malmö is the third largest city of Sweden and has lately been going through an extraordinary growth and development. Marking the borders between Sweden and Denmark, Malmö is an artistic, cultural, educational and touristic hub of the Swedish South, much loved by locals and visitors alike.

During the 16th century, Malmö formed part of Denmark and was the primary “rival” of Copenhagen. The Rosklide Treaty saw the city and the Scania Region being annexed to Sweden in 1658.

The whole city a symbol of open horizons, multicultural consciousness and progress, Malmö embraces whoever sets foot on its grounds, regardless of them being residents, students or tourists. A travel destination that’s on the rise and will soon get to the travel tops of this planet! Get there while you still can, before the world knows!

The airport of Malmö (Malmö-Sturup flygplats) is located 28 kilometres east of the city centre and can be reached by bus and taxi.

    Malmo Guide

Your day in Malmö begins at the legendary Malmöhus Slott castle, built by Erik of Pomerania in 1436, to control the fast-growing medieval city of Malmö. The castle was rebuilt in 1534 by King Christian III in Gothic-Renaissance style and today it houses the Malmö Museer, a complex of three excellent museums:

    • The Naturmuseum, a very well-organised Natural History Museum

    • The Konstmuseum, a Fine Arts Museum that houses the largest collection of 20th century Scandinavian art in the world

    • The Stadsmuseum, dedicated to the history of the city of Malmö

    • The Teknikens och Sjöfartens Hus, a museum of maritime and technology

    • The Kommendanthuset, a former arsenal, today hosting photography exhibitions

Continue to the Old Town of Malmö (Gamla Staden), the historic core of the city that’s circled by a large canal. The Old Town of Malmö has three main squares, Stortorget, Lilla Torg and Adolfs Torg, all of them of great historical importance.

Don’t miss the nearby Sankt Petri Kyrka, Malmö’s most significant church that makes up for the lack of a cathedral. The Gothic church of Saint Peter was built in the 14th century using the German Marienkirche as a model. Supreme highlight of the church area is the Krämarkapellet chapel, housing exceptional genuine masterpieces of art that date back to 1400!

At the north-western side of the Old Town, the skyline is dominated by the ultra-modern Turning Torso, the most contemporary piece of architecture in Malmö. Reaching a height of 190 metres, this extraordinary building designed by Santiago Calatrava represents a major breakthrough in modern architecture; it forms a 90º angle!

Your next stop is the Malmö Konsthall, one of Europe’s most treasured contemporary art centres. The building frequently hosts cutting-edge exhibitions doing a great job combining the classical with the modern.

Finally, you couldn’t miss the Öresund Bridge, this marvellous architectural structure that links Malmö to Copenhagen. With a length of 8 kilometres, one can easily cross it in less than 15 minutes!

The official language of Malmö is Swedish; English is widely spoken by practically everyone.
