Minsk Guide

You could start your Minsk adventure at the Independence Square (ploshcha Nezalezhnastsi), where a 7-metre-high statue of Lenin will welcome you. This is the city’s largest square and boasts a series of important buildings, governmental premises and touristic attractions.

  • Next to the statue, you can see the University of Belarus

  • The Minsk Executive Committee building (Belarus (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, KGB), right opposite the statue of its founder, Cheka

  • The Parliament

  • The Church of Saints Simon and Helena or simply Red Church, dating back to 1910, one of the few buildings that survived the war

Your next stop should be none other than the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, Belarus’s most important museum and one of the world’s best, if you’re interested in knowing more about World War II and its consequences, particularly in Eastern Europe.

Exhibitions include 28 collections of weaponry, equipment, vehicles and other war paraphernalia, tens of thousands of documents and pictures, personal belongings, uniforms and memorabilia of this horrendous war.

The museum is housed in a brand new building that opened on July 2014, at the Heroes Square. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, with an impressive radiant façade and a symbolic meaning following every inch of it.

If you wish to be informed on another kind of history, you will want to visit the Residence of Lee Harvey Oswald; does the name sound familiar? Lee Harvey Ostwald is John F. Kennedy’s assassin he spent a fair amount of his interesting life in Minsk, just before he came back to the USA to kill the American president.

Continue to the Victory Square (Пло́шча Перамо́гі), dominated by the 38-metre-high obelisk, the base of which is decorated with carvings and sculptures by notable Belarusian artists and bears an eternal flame.

The obelisk was built in honour of all the lives that perished during the Great Patriotic War; the square is now a place of pilgrimage for the Belarusians.

At the south-eastern side of the Masherova bridge, at the area known as ploshcha Svabody, is where you’ll find Minsk’s Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. Though Minsk declares no official religion, the vast majority of the population are considered Orthodox Christians; the cathedral is a marvellous two-towered building of elegant architecture, painted in white and green and greatly resembling the Russian religious architecture. It was built back in 1628.
