    Information about Mykonos

Mykonos is a beautiful Greek island, part of the Cyclades, situated in the Aegean Sea. Mykonos consists of Mykonos Town (Chora) and several villages around the island that feature the typical Cycladic background; cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, iconic churches and windmills, excellent beaches.

It all started when Aristotle Onassis spotted the island and saw its potential, during the ‘60’s. Immediately Mykonos became the ultimate place to be in Greece, attracting important personalities and celebrities. The crowds followed and Mykonos became Greece’s mecca of tourism, making new friends, passionate fans and some enemies that saw the island overflown with tourists – after all, it is said that you either love or hate Mykonos.

Highlights of your stay in Mykonos include early-evening walks across Matoyianni street, late-night dancing in clubs like Cavo Paradiso and Paradise, cocktails in Little Venice and star-gazing at the windmills.

The rest is up to you to discover!

    Airport

The airport of Mykonos (Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Μυκόνου) is located 3 kilometres from Mykonos Town and is accessible by bus and taxi.

    Getting around Mykonos

Mykonos is served by an extensive bus network. Fares start from 1.40€ and a typical taxi fare costs from 8.00€.

    Mykonos Guide

Your stay in Mykonos is centred on Mykonos Town or Chora. The capital of Mykonos is a maze of narrow streets and traditional Cycladic houses, interrupted only by beautiful flowered yards. Take a careful look at the architecture and you will notice that some of the buildings are different; they are the “captains’ houses” (kapetanospita) and represent fine examples of the old mansions of Mykonos.

As the name implies, the captains’ houses belonged to captains, wealthy and important figures of Mykonos’s social life. One of them belonged to Manto Mavrogenous, legendary commander of the Greek War of Independence.

While you’re in Mykonos, you should certainly visit these museums:

    • The Folklore Museum of Mykonos, housed in one of the captains’ houses and exhibiting a rich collection of traditional furniture, Byzantine icons, marbles and local artefacts and memorabilia.

    • The Maritime Museum, housing an exceptional collection of replicas of pre-Minoan ships, documents, maritime equipment and historic related items.

Forget the off-the-beaten-path routes for now and head to the.. beaten path; Matoyanni is the most charming street in Mykonos and the best place to shop, dine, enjoy a drink along with some people-watching and feel the island’s unique cosmopolitan vibe.

As you making your way through the streets of Mykonos Town, don’t be baffled if you see a pelican walking among the crowds.

Petros the Pelican is the symbol of Mykonos; but how it all started? It was back in 1955, when an injured pelican was found there by a fisherman. The fisherman cured the pelican and set it free, however the pelican had other plans. Instead of flying away, the bird chose to stay in Mykonos, becoming the official mascot of the island.

The original Petros, having lived thirty years of his life in the island, eventually passed away and was succeeded by three more pelicans that arrived in Mykonos.

Continue to the neighbourhood known as Little Venice, referring to its resemblance to the Italian city’s everlasting charm.

Little Venice, originally named Alevkantra, was the place where women gathered to wash their clothes. Nowadays it’s the most famous quarter in Mykonos Town, featuring a magnificent series of traditional houses with their balconies “hanging” just above the waves and commanding immaculate views to the sea. This is also where you’ll find a fine selection of cocktail bars and restaurants.

Head to the Castle, but first make a brief stop at the legendary windmills of Mykonos, facing Little Venice. The 5 historic windmills now stand as the ultimate iconic and photogenic location of Mykonos, but it wasn’t always like this; back in the days, the windmills were crucial for the sustenance of Mykonos and the surrounding Cyclades, since they were the primary mills of the region.

Boni’s Mill is the only one that has remained exactly the same as it used to be; you can even enter the mill and see a collection of original milling equipment, left untouched by time!

As you reach the Castle, you will come across the church of Panagia Paraportiani, a fabulous whitewashed church that, in reality, consists of five smaller chapels; four on the ground floor and one more forming the upper floor and the dome.

The list of beaches of Mykonos is long and appropriate for every taste and preference. Highlights include:

    • Organised: The cosmopolitan beaches of Kalo Livadi, Paraga and Psarou, the quieter Agia Anna beach, Paradise and Super Paradise for crazy crowds, music and dancing, Elia, Kalafatis and Panormos for a serene ambience and Ornos beach, ideal for families.

    • Non organised: Agios Sostis, Megali Ammos, Kapari, Merhia and Fokos beaches.

The official language in Mykonos is Greek.
