Norwich Guide

The primary attraction and major landmark of Norwich is none other than the Cathedral; and this is where your adventure in Norwich begins.

The Cathedral of Norwich represents one of the finest examples of English cathedrals, second in size only to the Salisbury Cathedral!

The Cathedral was built in 1096 and gained its present Gothic façade in 1463. Apart from its size, the cathedral is also famous for the 1,200 carved decorations, each no larger than a door knob, depicting scenes from the Bible – the so-called “bosses”.

At the heart of Norwich, nearby the Cathedral, you will come across Tombland which has nothing to do with what the name implies. Stemming from an ancient Scandinavian word for open space, instead of tombs, Tombland is a wide open space and features some of the city’s best bars and restaurants.

The Castle of Norwich, perched on a hill looming over the city, is the most majestic Norman structure in the region. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle remains in an amazingly well-preserved state and is a definite must-see if you’re visiting Norwich.

It now houses museums and art galleries, boasting exquisite collections of art, archaeology and natural history.

If you would like more world-class art, head to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, a property of the University of East Anglia and second most important fine arts centre. There, you will have the opportunity to witness an interesting collection of Picasso, Moore and Degas masterpieces, as well as the work of many international artists.

Other collections include artefacts and memorabilia from Africa, America and the Pacific, documents and treasures of the local and international artistic heritage.

Have you ever been inside an original medieval building? Dragon Hall is a genuine medieval merchant’s trading hall dating back to 1430. The building is a national monument, but you can take a guided tour inside. Do notice the carved dragon decorating the first floor, after which the whole building was named.

The official language of Norwich is English.
