    Information about Panama City

The location of Panama City was discovered by Vasco Núñez de Balboa and the city was founded a bit later, in 1519, by Governor Pedro Arias de Ávila. The city soon became a major governmental and religious centre, but it was burned to ashes by an English pirate named Henry Morgan.

Three years later, Panama City was once again founded, but this time a strategic location was picked, to avoid similar incidents. After the Independence of Colombia, Panama City became the official capital of Panama.

The Panama Canal played a major part in the city’s development. The canal was constructed in 1914, but it wasn’t until 1999 that USA gave up on its ownership and Panama was finally in charge of it.

Modern Panama is independent and dynamic, while Panama City is considered to be on of Central America’s wealthiest cities and a top travel destination. Book your air tickets now!

    Panama City Guide

Your experience in Panama City begins at the Panamá Viejo, the city’s historic centre. It’s the location where the city of Panama was first founded back in 1519, before it was destroyed by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671.

Panama City’s Old Town is a top tourist destination and an archaeological site of great importance, consisting of the ruins of former colonial buildings, connected to each other with secret passageways and paths.

Be sure to visit the Panamá Viejo Museum, where the history of the city is presented thoroughly through digital exhibitions and collections of furniture, costumes, ceramics and lots of pre-Columbian memorabilia, dating back hundreds of years before the Spanish Invasion.

The most significant landmark of the Panama City Old Town is the Cathedral; more precisely, the Torre de la Catedral, the Cathedral’s Tower. Fully renovated, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy a rare panoramic view of the city.

Continue to the Casco Viejo district, the area where Panama’s capital was moved to after the demolish of the first location, at the foot of Cerro Ancón. The new location was selected due to its strategic purposes and, thus, protected the city from similar events and pirate attacks.

Casco Viejo retains a captivating colonial atmosphere, owing much of its charm to the elegant 19th century architecture, inspired by French, Spanish and Italian styles.

Flowered squares, elegant structures and passageways and waterfronts for incredible walks; it’s all part of the colonial beauty that made UNESCO designate the area as a World Heritage Site.

Take a break from exploring the city and visit the Museo del Canal Interoceánico de Panamá, if you wish to know more about the Panama Canal. The museum follows the Canal’s history from the pre-Columbian era to the Spanish Conquest, the first French attempts in 1881 and the American ones in 1914, until modern times. A must-see to understand the huge importance of the canal both to the world trade and the Panama nation!

    Panama’s official language is Spanish.

    Visa Requirements

To enter Panama, you need to have a passport, valid up until 6 months after your travel dates. Greek citizens do not need a Visa, for a maximum stay of 180 days.

    When to Go

Panama City has a borderline tropical climate that’s pleasant all year round and has two distinct seasons.

    • The dry season lasts from December until April and it’s the most popular and crowded time of the year.

    • The wet season (April – October) is still pleasant, but frequently sees downpours and humidity levels are a lot higher.

You can visit Panama City any time of the year, but it’s good to know the basic characteristics of every season, so as to be able to pack properly and organise your trip accordingly.
