Getting around Parma
You can get around the historic centre of Parma on foot, as the use of cars is strictly prohibited. For your transportation outside the city centre, you can use an extensive bus network. Fares start at 1.40€ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.00€.
The most distinctive sight and landmark of Parma is the Cathedral (Duomo) and it could be the perfect place to begin your exploration.
The Cathedral was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style, while the Lombard Lions guarding the main gate were a 13th-century addition. With a dark pink colour, the cathedral stands beside the Gothic bell tower.
The legendary octagonal dome of the cathedral is famous for its elaborate mural. A work by the great Correggio, the mural depicts the well-known masterpiece “The Assumption of Mary” (L'Assunzione della Vergine) and dates back to 1520.
Behind the Duomo, you’ll notice a dark, atmospheric church with an enormous bell tower. It’s the San Giovanni Evangelista Church, this time in Baroque style, also decorated by Correggio and Parmigianino.
Continue in the same religious spirit, you cannot miss the Baptistery (Battistero), one of northern Italy’s most important Romanesque buildings. Inspired mainly by Benedetto Antelami, its construction began in 1196 and was completed in 1302. Made wholly out of marble of Verona, this octagonal building with four arched gates and fantastic biblical murals cannot go unnoticed.
Two more major stops are almost compulsory for you:
- The National Gallery (Galleria Nazionale), housed in the Palazzo della Pilotta, housing excellent art collections from the 15th to the 19th century
- The Palazzo Ducale, at the banks of River Parma, exactly what you need to spend a pleasant and relaxing afternoon in its gardens, fountains and parks.
