Getting around Paros
You can get around Paros using the island’s extensive bus network. Fares start at 1.60€ and taxi fares are dependent on the route.
Your tour of Paros begins in Parikia, the island’s capital. Cosy and cosmopolitan, Parikia boasts idyllic cobbled streets, elegant buildings of traditional architecture, marble fountains and a relaxing atmosphere.
In Parikia, you will come across the Church of Ekatontapyliani, Paros’s ultimate religious attraction. It is said that the church was founded by St. Helen, during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Since then, the Byzantine church – also known as the Church of the 100 Gates – has been through deterioration, damage and subsequent restoration projects; it now houses the Byzantine Museum.
The Venetian Castle of Parikia, situated at the heart of Parikia’s historic core, dates back to the 13th century. Having served as a primary defence point from pirates and other enemies, the castle was built using material taken by ancient temples.
Of all the beautiful villages outside Parikia, two stand out:
- Lefkes is arguably the most beautiful village between the two, perched on a hill 250 metres above sea level. Lefkes boasts an impressive architecture, combining the traditional Cycladic element with the Ottoman style. Moreover, this is where you can see the oldest windmill in Paros, dating back to over 400 years ago!
You cannot miss the Valley of the Butterflies; a lush field of immense beauty, the Valley of the Butterflies is the home of swarms of Panaxia quadripunctaria butterflies, residing there for the summer.
- Naousa, a quaint fishing village until recently, has lately been going through a tremendous growth and tourist development - fortunately without losing its personal touch and local charm. Restaurants, little cafes and boutiques are all there for you to find anything you need, however to feel Naousa’s true energy and beauty, we suggest you head to the inner city, wander around the streets and explore this magnificent village in your own time.
The official language in Paros Island is Greek, however practically everybody speaks fairly good English.
