Phnom Penh was founded in 1430, allegedly by a woman named Penh; when she accidentally came across four statues of Buddha, she decided to build a temple on top of the hill. The city founded later at that region was named Phnom Penh, which translates into “Penh’s hill”.

Once the “Peal of Asia”, Phnom Penh has gone through dark and turbulent times, with the permanent scars by the Red Khmers. However times have changed and Phnom Penh now stands proud and welcomes its hundreds of visitors, growing at a fast rate.

Nowadays, Phnom Penh is one of the most popular Asian capitals, an idyllic travel destination that has to offer so much in so many levels. A lifetime experience, the trip to Phnom Penh is unforgettable!

    Phnom Penh Guide

The perfect point for you to start your Phnom Penh tour are the extensive premises of the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh. This beautiful royal building complex is a true oasis amidst the crowded city centre.

Built in Khmer architecture in 1866, the building served as the seat of King Norodom Sihanouk and his heir and remained so until 2004. Across the southeastern side of the palace, you can find the Silver Pagoda, the adjacent Buddhist temple that is coated with more than 5,000 silver plates, each weighing up to 1 kilogram – a total weight of around 5 tons!

The Silver Pagoda is also called Wat Prah Keo, meaning the “Temple of Emerald Buddha” and houses the national symbol of Cambodia, the sacred crystalline statue of Emerald Buddha, dating back to the 17th century.

North of the palace and within short distance, the National Museum of Cambodia is Phnom Penh’s most important museum, boasting exquisite collections of Khmer sculpture and art, the greatest of its kind internationally!

Continue to a rather dark, yet utterly important attraction of Phnom Penh, especially if you’re interested in gaining full knowledge of the city’s history. The S21 Tuol Sleng Museum is the school that was converted into a prison, torture chamber and execution site of more than 20,000 prisoners, from 1975 to 1978. You can join a full tour around the prison cells, see the torture equipment, collections of photographs and other memorabilia of the prisoners.

Finally, head to the Wat Phnom temple. It is said that Phnom Penh was named after the Wat Phnom temple. The temple was built on top of “Penh’s hill”, allegedly by a wealthy widow named Penh, when she accidentally came across four statues of Buddha.

The official language of Phnom Penh is Khmer.
