Pisa Guide

Your day in Pisa begins at the medieval Duomo Square, or Square of the Miracles, dominated by the Romanesque Cathedral (Duomo), with its sharp arches and his elaborate interior decorated with beautiful murals.

It’s said that Galileo himself got inspired to compose his theory of the Pendulum, by the pendulum hanging at the main nave of the Cathedral!

The Tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the Cathedral but a flaw in its construction resulted in its leaning. Though restored and reinforced many times in the past, the reality is that the leaning of the tower increases 1 mm annually.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is currently open to the public and research has shown that the tower’s going to be safe for at least three more centuries.

The Cemetery (Camposanto – Holy Field), allegedly built around the sacred soil from Golgotha and the Santa Maria della Spina Church are the next two buildings that will catch your eye.

The Church of Santa Maria della Spina is an elegant Gothic church of impressive architecture, said to own a thorn from the crown of Jesus Christ!

Apart from the Tower and the churches, there is another religious building in Pisa that will leave you astonished; the Baptistery of St. John was built in 1152 and its construction was completed in 1363, designed by Diotisalvi.

The monumental size of the Baptistery is contradicted by the elegant style and the splendid marble details, creating an unreal masterpiece of architecture. The interior is even more impressive, lacking any excessive decorations, centred on the bronze statue of St. John the Baptist, a work by Nicola Pisano.

Finally, you should definitely pay a visit to the National Museum of St. Matthias (National Museum of San Matteo), with collections of medieval sculptures and paintings, and the Botanical Garden of Pisa (Orto Botanico di Pisa), the oldest university botanical garden in Europe!

Pisa’s official language is Italian.
