    Information about Salamanca

Salamanca, holding a strategic location, was founded by the Celts, was conquered by the Romans and, by 1102 and having known more than a handful of leaders, it was reconquered by Alfonso VI.

It was him that founded the first university of Spain in 1218, an institution that gained international fame and gave Salamanca the title of the cultural capital of the Spanish Empire.

Side by side Oxford, Paris and Bologna, Salamanca was ranking as one of medieval Europe’s most significant and acknowledged centres of learning, later designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

People of intellect love Salamanca, but so do young students that made the city’s population rise to 180,000. An elegant destination, Salamanca offers quality, knowledge and entertainment, facing the beautiful natural landscape of Castile and León and shining from medieval charm! It’s really a destination worth checking out!

    Salamanca Guide

You can start your exploration of Salamanca at Plaza Mayor, the city’s largest square and focal point of everyday life. The square was designed by Alberto Churriguera and is considered by many to be Spain’s most beautiful square!

Salamanca has not one, but two cathedrals; the old one and the new one.

    • The Gothic New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva) dates back to the 18th century; it took 220 years for its construction to be completed. Head to the Puerta de la Torre gate and climb up to the tower’s top, to admire a fascinating panoramic view of the city.

    • The Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja) has Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic elements and is particularly famous for its nave, constructed in the 15th century, which consists of 53 frames, each of one depicting a different scene from the lives of Jesus and Mary.
The University of Salamanca (Universidad Civil) is the old university in Spain. It was founded in 1218 and was one of Europe’s largest educational institutions during the medieval times.

Finally, you could pay a visit to the Art Deco & Art Nouveau Museum (Museo de Art Nouveau y Art Decó), to enjoy collections of paintings, jewellery, furniture and porcelain dolls.

    Salamanca’s official language is Spanish.
