    San Carlos de Bariloche Guide

The centre and beating heart of San Carlos de Bariloche is the Centro Cívico and it’s there where you could start your exploration of the city.

Bariloche’s major landmark, the Centro Cívico is a beautiful building complex made of stone and wood, greatly resembling an alpine settlement. It was built in 1940 by architect Ernesto de Estrada - who was actually inspired by the Swiss city Bern – and houses most of the city’s municipal and tourist premises.

Don’t miss the Museum of Patagonia (Museo de la Patagonia "Francisco P. Moreno"), housed in the Centro Cívico. There, you will find interesting archaeological and ethnographic collections that tell the story – natural, geological and social – of Northern Patagonia.

Particular focus has been given on the indigenous Mapuche and their struggle of resistance to the “Conquest of the Desert”, a military campaign run by the Spanish conquistadors.

Continue to the marvellous Cathedral of San Carlos de Bariloce (Catedral Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi), dating back to 1947 and designed by Alejandro Bustillo. It follows the neogothic style, with elegant details and simple lines making up a majestic and beautiful building.

The Nahuel Huapi National Park is the oldest and most popular National Park of Argentina and a must-see while you’re there. Extending at a surface of 750 hectares, the park encompasses forests, lakes, glaciers and hills of immense natural beauty and offers lots of sports and adventure activities.

Highlights of the park include the following:

    • Lago Nahuel Huapi, the largest glacier lake of the park, with length exceeding 100 kilometres and a total surface of 500 sq. km.

    • The inactive volcano Tronador, named after the sound of ice falling from the top and crushing onto the ground, is the most popular and exciting spot of the park.

    • The second most popular attraction is Cerro Catedral, a hill top looming over the park from an altitude of 2,388 metres. This is one of South America’s largest ski centres, with a capacity of 22,000 skiers per hour!
Don’t leave Bariloche without having enjoyed the breathtaking panoramic view of the city and Nahuel Huapi from Cerro Otto, a 1,404-metre high hill top. You can cycle or climb to the top; or you can take the cable car (Teleférico Cerro Otto)!
San Carlos de Bariloche’s official language is Spanish.
