    Information about San Sebastian

San Sebastián (or Donostia, in Basque) is situated in the northern tip of Spain, very close to the French borders. Occupying a beautiful region around the Bahía de la Concha bay and River Río Urumea, the once quaint fishing village is now one of the most popular summer destinations in Spain, attracting more and more visitors every year.

San Sebastián’s skyline is filled with elegant belle-époque buildings, reminders of the golden era of the Spanish and French aristocracy who established their summer residences in San Sebastián.

Modern San Sebastián enjoys international fame as a one of the most attractive European resorts; San Sebastián’s beaches – Playa de la Concha especially – rank among the top urban beaches in Europe.

What’s more, in San Sebastián you will have the opportunity to discover a new face of Spain, experience the Basque soul and spirit and dive into a whole different culture than what you may have experienced so far.

The airport of San Sebastián (San Sebastián Airport) is located 20 kilometres away from the city centre and can be reached by bus.

    San Sebastian Guide

San Sebastián has three main focal points: The Old Town (Parte Vieja), the commercial centre (Centro Romántico) and the Gros district.

Parte Vieja stretches across the Monte Urgull hill, spanning the coastline from East to West. This is where you can find most of the traditional pintxo bars – pintxo is a local type of tapas – and many cheap hotels around the Plaza de la Constitución. The Old Town of San Sebastián has retained something of the fishing village it once was, the old atmosphere and charm.

After you enjoy your pintxo, take your time and wander around the most important spots and attractions of the Old Town:

    • Make a quick stop at the Vicente Cathedral and then head to the Museo San Telmo, one of the most significant museums of the city. Collections include historical documents, artefacts and contemporary artwork, reflecting different aspects of the Basque culture and history.

    • The Palacio del Mar is your next stop; this monumental modern aquarium is equipped with tanks filled with hundreds of marine species. A transparent underwater tunnel will guide you through the depths of the sea, while sharks, eels and colourful fish will swim all around you.

On the first floor of the Palacio del Mar, the Oceanographic Museum will provide you with a thorough presentation of the relationship between man and sea, with exhibitions of historic fishing equipment and vessels, naval memorabilia and marine rocks.

As your reach the western part of Parte Vieja, you will come across one of the most popular urban beaches in Europe. Playa de la Concha features a large coastline with white sand and crustal waters, ideal for families and couples.

Take the funicular to the top of Monte Igueldo, to enjoy a fascinating panoramic view of San Sebastián or climb up the top of Monte Urgull to enjoy a similar backdrop!

Centro Romántico is located south of Parte Vieja and is San Sebastián’s major commercial hub. The district stretches from Playa de la Concha to the banks of River Río Urumea and is filled with restored mansions dating back to the 19th century.

Finally, the Gros district is situated across the eastern side of the river and is a beautiful, laid-back neighbourhood, mostly famous for its beach. Zurriola beach is San Sebastián’s second most popular beach and is a surfer’s paradise!

You cannot leave San Sebastián without paying a visit to the Museo Chillida-Leku, dedicated to the legendary Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The museum is perched on top of the Hernani mountain town and features open-air collections of monoliths and other sculptures, exhibited in the open nature.

San Sebastián’s official languages are Basque and Spanish.
