Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. It was founded in 1610 and is the oldest capital of the USA. Santa Fe’s national identity is a colourful mosaic of American, English, Spanish and native American heritage.
Santa Fe was the home of the Pueblo tribe of Native Americans, from 1050 to 1150. Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1610, founded the modern city of Santa Fe and named it capital of the Spanish colony; a title the city kept after the USA annexation.

The airport of Santa Fe (Santa Fe Municipal Airport) is located 16 kilometres southwest of the city centre and can be reached by rail and bus.

Santa Fe Guide
Your day in Santa Fe begins at La Plaza, the city’s historic and artistic heart, since its foundation. From 1610 and on, the “La Plaza” district represents the centre of Santa Fe’s social life, cultural happenings and historic events; a perfect place to enjoy a stroll and get in touch with the local culture.
Around La Plaza, you’ll find a rare wealth of museums and historic buildings, starting from the one and only Loretto Chapel, designed after Paris’s Sainte Chapelle in 1873 – 1878.
Legends say that Loretto’s spiral staircase was built by a God-sent carpenter; the staircase forms two 360o angles without any evident of columns or any other means of providing stability; its construction remains a mystery!
Around the Plaza, you can enjoy two of the city’s most interesting art museums:
- The Georgia O’Keefe Museum: Dedicated to the great artist and to other notable artists of her time, this museum boasts more than 3,000 works of art, including 1,150 paintings, drawings and sculptures.
- The Palace of the Governors: The city’s oldest building and a work of art itself, the Palace of Governors is a designated national monument and now houses the State History Museum.
If you cannot have enough of Santa Fe’s museums, continue to the Museum Hill area, where the Museum of International Folk Art will welcome you with world-class exceptional collections of personal items, memorabilia, works of folklore art and artefacts from 100 different countries.
