    Sibenik is one of the Croatian gems decorating the Dalmatian coastline. Despite the damage it withstood during the Yugoslav Wars, Sibenik stands now proud and more beautiful than ever.

    Sibenik’s history begins in 1066 and king Petar Krešimir IV, followed by Croatian, Hungarian and Venetian conquerors. Of all conquerors, the latter were key-players in developing a strong architectural and artistic concerns, filling Sibenik with precious Renaissance treasures.

    Sibenik’s charm is concentrated around the Old Town, an idyllic district with cobbled streets, historic churches and secret alleys, with the great Cathedral looming over the old town; Croatia’s most important Renaissance building.     Begin your day in Sibenik at the Old Town, so beautiful as if it’s part of a medieval fairy-tale.

    Highlight there is the Cathedral (Katedrala Sv Jakova), one of Croatia’s most significant religious buildings. It was built in two different sessions, in 1431 and 1536 by many different architects, featuring Gothic and Renaissance elements. The Cathedral is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Within short distance, the Bunari Museum is built around one of the distinctive 15th-century water wells, the so-called “bunara”.

    Recently renovated, the Bunari Museum offers a unique interactive experience dedicated to Sibenik’s history and culture.

    Stroll around Sibenik’s fortifications and make a quick stop at the City Hall, a photogenic building dating back to 1533; the artists of this masterpiece remain unknown.

    Continue to St. Michael’s Castle (Tvrđava svetog Mihovila), an enormous medieval fort offering great views over Sibenik, River Krk and the Adriatic Sea. The castle was built in the 13th century and archaeological research has discovered items dating back to the prehistoric times.
