    Information about Sofia

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and has a population of 1,300,000. Sofia’s long history spans over seven millennia – after all, it’s one of Europe’s oldest cities. It is a typical stopover for those travelling to the nearby ski and sea resorts. But lately Sofia is changing, attracting more and more visitors every year who are overwhelmed by its dynamic energy and authentic feeling.

Something that distinguishes the greatest European capitals from all others? Green spaces! Sofia is a green city, housing four large parks within the city’s area!
Add to this the city’s large student population, the national love for art and culture, the elegant architecture, the archaeological and historical wealth and the low costs and you have an ideal destination that has it all!

    Airport

Sofia’s international airport (Letishte Sofiya) is located 5 kilometres northwest of the city centre and can be reached by bus (lines 84 and 384).

    Getting around Sofia

Sofia’s public transportation system consists of buses, trolleys, metro (3 lines), trams and trains. Fares start at 0.70lv and minimum taxi fare is 0.70lv.

    Sofia Guide

Wandering around Sofia’s city centre, you will come across many restored roman and medieval buildings, as well as some of the city’s most important landmarks and sights.

    • The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Sveti Aleksandar Nevski) is one of the world’s largest Orthodox churches with a capacity of 10,000 people. It is the seat of the Bulgarian Patriarchate and was built in memory of the Russians killed during the Russian-Turkish wars.

    • The Rotunda St. George is Sofia’s oldest building, dating back to the 4th century. This roman rotunda has gone through much and more, it was destroyed and rebuilt, converted to a mosque, bombed during World War II and has finally opened its gates to the public, after a full restoration process.

    • The Boyana Church is a medieval monument not to be missed. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church is famous for the eloquent and vivid murals that decorate its interior.

    • Nearby, the Banya Bashi Mosque is the only mosque still functioning in Sofia. It was built by Mimar Siman, also in charge of the construction of Istanbul’s Blue Mosque.
If you are a museum fanatic, you should definitely visit Sofia’s National Gallery, housing beautiful collections of Bulgarian art and the National Museum of History, where the country’s history is presented through a collection of 650,000 items.

For a more natural touch, you could visit mount Vitosha, within a short distance from the city centre and ski, hike or just relax in the peaceful forest.

When the sun starts to set, don’t miss the opportunity to go shopping, enjoy a traditional Bulgarian meal and have a drink at one of Sofia’s many night hotspots!

Bulgarian is Sofia’s official language, but most of the locals speak fairly good English.
