    Information about Stuttgart

Stuttgart is Germany’s sixth largest city and capital of the Baden-Württemberg state, in southern Germany. Holding a location of great natural beauty, Stuttgart is situated among green valleys and vineyards that even reach the city centre. The royal gardens stretch to vast areas and a U-shaped green zone crosses the centre of Stuttgart; locals call it the Green U.

Nicknamed “the metropolis of Swabia”, Stuttgart has been a victim of bombings, a refuge for revolutionists and the proud birthplace of some of the greatest inventions humanity has ever made.

The Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Bosch brands were created in Stuttgart; moreover, the first internal combustion engine and the first photocopier were first constructed there!

A key-player in innovation and scientific research, Stuttgart is the leader in technologies; but wait, because it gets better! Stuttgart also boasts a beautiful bunch of palaces and charming reminders of Stuttgart’s royal past, world-class modern museums and a sacred relationship with nature that inspires awe and respect.

Add to all these the extra-friendly and open-minded locals and you have a fascinating travel destination that will leave you speechless!

    Airport

The airport of Stuttgart (Flughafen Stuttgart) is located 10 kilometres south of the city centre and is accessible by the suburban railway (S2 and S3 lines).

    Getting around Stuttgart

You can get around Stuttgart by metro, suburban railway and public buses. Fares start from 1.20€ and minimum taxi fare costs 2.80€.

    Stuttgart Guide

Your day in Stuttgart begins at the central square of the city, the Schlossplatz.

Your first stop is none other than the Old Castle (Alte Schloss), nearby. The Castle was built in the 10th century and served as the residence of the Counts of Württemberg, rulers of the region.

During the World War II it was heavily bombed and had to be rebuilt. The Castle today houses Württemberg’s most prominent history museum, the Landesmuseum Württemberg. Collections include archaeological findings from the Palaeolithic to the medieval era, cultural, historical and ethnographic exhibitions focusing on the local lifestyle of those times.

Continue to the National Gallery of Stuttgart, which can be found in two branches.

    • The first branch of the gallery is housed on the building of the Old Gallery of Stuttgart (Alte Staatsgallerie) and holds important art collections with works frm 1300 to 1900

    • The second branch is to be found at the building of the New Gallery (Neue Staatsgallerie) and boasts modern art collections of the 20th century, with works by Picasso, Miró, Schlemmer and many more notable artists.
Do you love cars? Then you should definitely visit the Mercedez-Benz and Porsche Museums, both of which are dedicated to the founding, development and history of the two legendary brands!

A few kilometres outside Stuttgart, in Ludwigsburg, the Ludwigsburg Palace and Gardens are a must-see. The palace served as the royal seat up until 1918 and features Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles.

The Royal Gardens of the Ludwigsburg Palace are even more impressive; though nothing compares to the Schlossgarten, the vast green zone that begins at the Schlossplatz, crosses the centre of Stuttgart and follows River Neckar, until it reaches the Rosensteinpark!

The official language of Stuttgart is German; French and English are also widely spoken.
