    Information about Trieste

Trieste is situated at the north-eastern tip of Italy, near the borders with Slovenia, looking much more Slovenian than Italian. A historic seaport since its founding, Trieste knew great growth and development as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from 1867 to 1918 and was named capital of arts, literature and music.

The local population of Trieste has developed their own distinct dialect; the so-called triestin or triestino.

Unlike any typical tourist destination, Trieste retains its original character, thus being more and more attractive and desirable, when other destinations give in to tourist vanity.

Proud of its neoclassical and art nouveau skyline, Trieste offers a wide range of attractions and experiences; historical, cultural, culinary and artistic, something for everyone!

    Airport

The airport of Trieste (Aeroporto di Trieste–Friuli Venezia Giulia) is located 38 kilometres northwest of the city centre and is accessible by bus and taxi.

    Getting around Trieste

You can get around Trieste by bus and taxi; fares start at 1.00€ and minimum taxi fare costs 3.75€.

    Trieste Guide

The focal point of the city centre of Trieste is the Piazza dell’ Unità d’ Italia, considered as the largest Italian square that ends to a harbour. This square forms part of Trieste’s medieval heritage, dating back to the Austro-Hungarian era, and is a popular spot with lots of cafes and restaurants, commanding great sea views.

Don’t miss the Basilica di San Giusto, a Byzantine church that incorporates two paleo-Christian temples, famous for its fabulous mosaics and frescoes; dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, they remain in an extremely well-preserved state.

The Castello di San Giusto looms over the church, a castle built in 1470. The view from the ramparts is magnificent. Inside the castle walls, you will find an open-air theatre and a museum while, within short distance, another museum deserves your attention:

The Civico Museo di Storia ed Arte ed Orto Lapidario boasts fine collections of archaeological items from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. You will find more masterpieces of classical art, sculpture and ceramics at the adjacent garden.

Your last stop is yet another castle; the Castello di Miramare is Trieste’s most recognisable landmark, built in an imperial luxurious style by Archduke Maximilian Francis of Austria in 1850. The Neo-Gothic castle is situated 7 kilometres from the city centre and is definitely a must-see if you visit Trieste.

The official language of Trieste is Italian; the local triestino dialect is also widely spoken.
