Uppsala Guide

Uppsala’s most recognisable and distinctive landmark is the Cathedral (Uppsala domkyrka). You’ll immediately spot it from the Gothic twin towers that loom over the city from a height of 120 metres. The Cathedral of Uppsala is the largest and tallest church in Scandinavia. Built in the 13th century, it houses the tombs of many Swedish kings, St. Erik, philosopher Emmanuel Swedenborg and botanist Carolus Linnaeus, to name a few.

The legendary Castle of Uppsala (Uppsala Slott) was built in 1549 by the dynasty of Gustav Vasa and held a key-role in the history of Uppsala and Sweden. Many important historical events happened there, such as the executions of the Sture family in 1567 and the abdication of Queen Christina.

Continue to the Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala), one of the most significant archaeological sites in Scandinavia. It is there that the ruins of tombs and churches from the 12th century were discovered, as well as a series of royal tombs dating back to the 6th century. An area steeped in history, forever covered by a veil of mystery, mythology and old tales about Scandinavian kings, gold temples and human sacrifices; mesmerising is the least you can say about it!

When you head back to the modern part of the city, you should definitely visit the following museums, which rank among the city’s and the country’s best:

  • The Gustavianum Museum is housed in the oldest building of the university and houses precious historical collections. Items include mummies, Vikings artefacts, scientific exhibitions and documents about the progress and development of the university over the years.

  • The Linnémuseet and adjacent Linnéträdgården form a fascinating sight you should by all means experience; we promise you will find it extremely exciting, even if you’re not botanists. Carolus Lynnaeus (Carl von Linné) was a great botanist, zoologist and physician who is considered to be one of the scientists that set the foundation for the modern ecology and binomial nomenclature – and he invites you to a fantastic journey to his life and work!

The official language of Uppsala is Swedish, but practically everyone speak fairly good English.
