    Information about Valencia

Valencia was founded in 138 B.C. as a Roman settlement and later bloomed as the capital of the Moorish Kingdom, until the 11th century, when it was conquered by El Cid. Continuing to change leaders, kings and conquerors, Valencia finally became capital of the Autonomous Community of Valencia and Spain’s third largest city, following Madrid and Barcelona.

Valencia grew due to the development of trade and exports , with the largest percentage of the city’s wealth coming from the silk exchange.

Those golden years of the silk trade are still obvious around the city, on the Gothic buildings, the baroque churches and the numerous landmarks standing as symbols of Valencia's majestic past.

Valencia has a truly European character, having given birth to world-class cutting edge architects like Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela who redesigned Valencia’s skyline and added innovative and strongly futuristic elements.

Add to all these the foundation of Europe's most modern arts and science centre, a genuinely friendly atmosphere among the locals and a warm climate and you have the perfect travel destination!

    Airport

Valencia’s international airport is located 8 kilometres west of the city centre and is accessible by bus and metro (lines 2 and 3).

    Getting around Valencia

Valencia’s public transportation system consists of metro, buses and railway. Fares start at 1.20€ and minimum taxi fare costs around 5.00€.

    Valencia Guide

Most of Valencia’s sights are located in the La Seu area, between the city’s two largest squares, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza Virgen.

If you could see only one thing in Valencia, it should definitely be the old Silk Exchange La Lonja. UNESCO included the market in the World Heritage Sites and it’s also considered to be one of Europe’s most significant Gothic structures.

Opposite La Lonja, you’ll come across Europe’s oldest food market, housed in a traditional Valencian building and bustling with life.

    • Continue to the Almonia square, dominated by the Cathedral of St. John, the legendary seat of the Holy Grail!

    • Next stop: the Miguelete Tower, offering great panoramic views of the city

    • Two other towers, the Torres de Serranos are of equal beauty and major historic importance, built in the 14th century as part of the city’s fortifications

    • Don’t miss the Fine Arts Museum of Valencia (Museo de Bellas Artas), at the banks of River Turia, housing beautiful Valencian and Flenish art masterpieces by artists like Bosch, El Greco, Ribera and Morales.
Valencia’s ultimate place to be is the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias), the latest European science centre that focuses on art, science and culture, in an entertaining and educating way!

Complete your day in Valencia, spending your afternoon at the Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botanico). The gardens were founded in 1567 and now house more than 3,000 plant species, trees and impressive palm trees.

Valencia’s two official languages are Spanish and Valencian.
