Vienna’s international airport (Flughafen Wien) is located 18 kilometres southeast of the city centre and can be reached by the suburban railway (S-Bahn) and the airport trains (CAT).
Getting around Vienna
You can get around Vienna by metro (U-Bahn), suburban railway (S-Bahn), bus and trams. Ticket fares start at 2.10€ and minimum taxi fare is 2.60€.
Vienna’s city centre (Ringstrasse) is dominated by the neogothic Rathaus (City Hall), in Rathausplatz. The building is especially charming when lit and the square often hosts performances and other happenings around Christmas and spring.
Opposite the square, you can drink your coffee where Sigmund Freud used to drink his, at the Café Landtmann.Within short distance, Stephansplatz is a popular meeting place in Vienna, with the Cathedral Staphansdom being a major cultural and religious landmark of Austria.
Walking away from Ringstrasse, you will see the breathtaking building of the Austrian Parliament. It was designed by Theophil Hansen and was built in neoclassical style, with Greek architectural elements and an enormous statue of Athena guarding its entrance.
Continue by visiting some of Vienna’s famous palaces. Hofburg was the winter palace if the Habsburgs and remains a symbol of Vienna’s cultural heritage. Schloss Schönbrunn was their summer palace and is famous for the magnificent Royal Gardens, a true masterpiece.
