    Information about Zadar

Zadar is a coastal city of Croatia, a precious gem of the Dalmatian Coastline. Zadar has gained international fame as one of Europe’s most idyllic historic towns, combining Roman, medieval and modern elements and incorporating them into the city’s own character.

Zadar has been inhabited since the Neolithic era, followed by Roman and Venetian leaders who each left their mark on the city.

The bombings of World War II took their toll in Zadar’s skyline, but the few buildings that survived are now of great historical and architectural importance, representing an excellent sample of Mediterranean architecture.

Modern Zadar is a dynamic, vibrant student city that never lost its genuine identity. Zadar’s locals are world-widely known for their open-mindedness and open-heartedness, accustomed to the multicultural element and always friendly to the visitor.

A destination certainly worthy of your attention!

The airport of Zadar (Zračna luka Zadar/Zemunik) is located 8 kilometres from the city centre and can be reached by bus.

    Getting around Zadar

Zadar’s public transportation network consists of buses. Fares vary from 0.50 HRK to 0.70 HRK per kilometre and minimum taxi fare costs 20.00 HRK.

    Zadar Guide

Zadar was once one of the most thoroughly walled Venetian cities. The first fortifications were laid during the Roman times and were later extended and reinforced with more walls, castles, bastions and towers, coming to surround the whole city. Today you can still see some remnants of the old fortifications, as well as four original gates.

Continue to the oldest point of interest in Zadar, the Roman Forum.

The Roman Forum was built somewhere between the 1rst and the 3rd century BC and included conference areas, buildings serving multiple purposes and a temple dedicated to Athena, Hera and Jupiter.

Parts of the buildings, columns, staircases and other ruins of the Roman Forum are to be found around the Forum.

As you walk around the city, you should notice two of Zadar’s most beautiful and impressive churches:

    • The Crkva sv. Donata u Zadru church is housed in a monumental round building, an excellent example of early Byzantine architecture. Dedicated to St. Donatus, the church was founded in the 9th century and was built upon the foundations of the Roman Forum.

    • The Cathedral of Zadar (Zadarska katedrala), dating back to the 12th century, is dedicated to St. Anastasia and is the largest in Dalmatia. The Cathedral is a building of exquisite architecture and the bell tower offers magnificent views of the city.

Head to the modern part of Zadar and Riva street, the main coastal road, focal point of local social life.

The "Morske orgulje" (“Sea Organ”) and "A Salute to The Sun" are two works designed by Nikola Bašić and are Riva’s main attractions. The two structures form an experimental audio-visual type of art, combining nature with music and science, delivering an extraordinary experience.

The official language of Zadar is Croatian.
