Begin your day in Zaragoza at the city’s central square, Plaza del Pilar, surrounded by many important historical and architectural monuments you could explore.
Zaragoza boasts not one, but two cathedrals. The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, dating back to the 16th century, is the most impressive of the two.
The cathedral’s name derive from a Christian tradition, according to which, the Virgin Mary made herself visible upon a column (Pilar), back in 40 A.D. It was around that column that the cathedral was built afterwards.
The second cathedral is situated in Zaragoza’s second largest square, Plaza de la Seo; and it’s called “La Seo”. La Seo represents a magnificent blend of gothic, baroque, Romanesque and Mudéjar elements. Built in the 12th century, it’s famous for its fine decorations with French and Flemish murals.
Between the two cathedrals, La Lonja is considered to be Zaragoza’s most notable example of urban architecture. The building dates back to 1551, when it served as a marketplace. Today it houses an exhibition centre and hosts regular exhibitions and performances.
You should by all means visit the Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta, a museum dedicated to the Roman amphitheatre found in Zaragoza, part of Roman Caesaraugusta. Collections include interesting archaeological items and artefacts; don’t miss the exact replica of the amphitheatre!
Finally, a quite special point of interest would be the Moorish palace Aljafería. Built in the 11th century as a harem in Zaragoza’s Muslim leaders’ service, it was later conquered by the Christians and was restored accordingly. It now houses the Seat of Aragon’s regional parliament.Zaragoza’s official language is Spanish.
